List of Uniform Acts (United States)

In the United States, a Uniform Act is a set of statutes designed to work together, also called a "model code," proposed by the Uniform Law Commissioners, more formally known as the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL). The NCCUSL is a body of lawyers, professors, legal scholars, and other professionals who work towards the standardization of laws across the various U.S. states. The NCCUSL does not have any legislative power; uniform acts become laws only to the extent they are enacted into law by state legislatures. State legislatures do not have to enact the precise language of a Uniform Act, and often enact laws with at least some modifications. In some cases, such as the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act, acceptance by states has proven difficult to obtain.

The existence of Uniform Acts results in large part from the inherent nature of the American federal system. The United States Congress lacks authority under the U.S. Constitution to directly legislate in many areas, because all powers not explicitly granted to the federal government are reserved to state governments under the Tenth Amendment. At the same time, there is a desire to have laws across the states that are as similar as practicable. Thus, the Uniform Acts are promulgated as models which states can then ratify in whole or part.

Some legal scholars have argued that the existence and codification of uniform acts, most notably the Uniform Commercial Code, has given American law less of a common law flavor and made it more similar to a civil law system.
