[edit] Jack Dawson

Jack Dawson

Born 1892
Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin
Died April 15, 1912
Atlantic Ocean

Jack Dawson was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in 1892. When he was 15, his parents died and he traveled the world on his own. His travels took him to many places, including Los Angeles and Paris. He is a talented artist, who takes a talent in drawing French women nude.

Somewhere along the line, Jack makes friends with a Italian immigrant named Fabrizio Di Rossi. Their travels bring them to Southampton on April 10th, 1912, sailing day for the RMS Titanic. Desperate to go to America, Jack bets all he and Fabrizio have on two third class tickets to the Titanic. Jack's full house hand wins the pot, and Jack and Fabrizio make it to the Titanic at the last minute, occupying Cabin G-60, along with Bjorn Gunderson and Olaus, two Swedish men.

While on board, he and Fabrizio meet Tommy Ryan, an Irish man also traveling third class. Jack looks up at the boat deck while relaxing on the poop deck and sees a woman who he thinks is very beautiful. Later that night, Jack stops the woman, Rose DeWitt Bukater, from committing suicide and he is considered a hero. Caledon Hockley, Rose's fiancé, invites Jack to have dinner with some first class passengers the next evening in gratitude. Jack accepts the offer.

The next day, Rose seeks Jack out to thank him for saving her. At dinner, with the help of Margaret Brown, Jack charms the first class passengers, and afterwards he passes Rose a note telling her to meet him at the clock, where he invites her to a third class "real party". While at the party, Jack and Rose get drunk and dance with each other, unknowingly being spied upon by Spicer Lovejoy, Caledon's manservant.

The next morning, April 14th, Jack attempts to speak to Rose, but Lovejoy stops him from entering first class premises. Desperate to talk to her, Fabrizio and Tommy help Jack sneak up to the boat deck. Jack steals Arthur Ryerson's jacket and sneaks Rose into the gymnasium to talk to her. Rose refuses to speak any more and says that she loves Cal and will marry him.

Later, while Jack is relaxing at the bow of the ship, Rose finds him there and claims that she has changed her mind. They share a passionate moment together and have their first kiss. Rose then asks Jack to draw her nude wearing only the diamond that Cal gave her, which Jack does. Lovejoy finds them in the hallway and chases them into the boiler room, where they lock the door on him. They make their way to the cargo hold where they make love. Around 11.40 pm, they return to the well deck of the ship where they share another passionate kiss. While they are kissing, the ship hits a large iceberg and is critically damaged. After realizing the seriousness of the situation, Rose suggests warning her mother and Cal. When Lovejoy sees them coming, he sneaks the diamond into Jack's pocket. As soon as Jack enters the room that Cal is in, Cal demands a search for his stolen property. The master-at-arms finds the diamond in Jack's pocket and discovers that the jacket he is wearing belongs to Arthur Ryerson. Jack is arrested and locked up in a room the bowels of the ship with the master-at-arms watching him.

The master-at-arms is sent away to control a riot, and Lovejoy takes over watching him. He expresses his belief that the ship will sink, and delivers a message from Cal (a punch in the gut) before leaving Jack locked up in the room. Moments later, the room begins to flood. Fortunately, Rose finds him with Thomas Andrews' directions, and she is able to cut his handcuffs with an axe. Cut off from their original way out, Jack and Rose look for another way back to the boat deck, reuniting with Fabrizio and Tommy in the process. Finally, they are able to break down a gate and make their way to the boat deck.

On the boat deck, they find Lifeboat 2, which is being loaded entirely with women and children, and Jack sends Tommy and Fabrizio to find another boat on the other side of the ship. While waiting on Lifeboat 2, they are found by Cal, who gives Rose his jacket. Cal reassures Rose that he and Jack will be able to get off the ship safely, and Rose is then put in the boat. While it lowers, at around 1.45 am, Cal tells Jack that there is an arrangement, but Jack will not get off the ship. Rose jumps back on the ship and runs to the Grand Staircase, where she embraces Jack. Enraged, Cal chases them into the flooding reception room with a gun. In a deleted scene, Lovejoy continues the chase into the dining room.

As they go back upstairs, they hear a little boy crying in a rapidly flooding hallway. They try to rescue him, but his father comes and grabs him. Seconds later, two doors burst open and water floods the hallway. Jack and Rose are thrown against a metal gate. Their only hope of escape is a terrified steward with keys. The steward tries to open the gate, but he drops the keys and runs away. Jack grabs them and opens the gate seconds before the hallway floods completely. Jack and Rose make their way aft, up seemingly endless stairs. It is now past 2 am.

While on their way back, Jack and Rose run into Thomas Andrews in the first class smoking room, who has chosen to stay there and die. By the time they reach the aft well deck, all the lifeboats have been launched and the water has reached the forward boat deck, pushing it underwater and forcing the stern to rise out of the water. They decide to stay on the ship as long as possible and head to the poop deck. As they make their way "up" the stern, it rises out of the water. Eventually the ship is sticking out at such a steep angle that anyone not holding on to something slides down the deck. Jack and Rose hold onto the stern railing as the ship continues to rise out of the water. Soon, the pressure causes the ship to split in two pieces. The stern end is pulled into the air, sticking out of the water at a ninety degree angle, and it sinks into the water at 2.20 am.

Once the Titanic is underwater, Jack and Rose find a piece of debris in the water to rest on which can only hold one person. While he slowly freezes to death, Jack makes Rose promise that she will survive this disaster, and that she will live a long and satisfying life. He then succumbs to hypothermia and Rose drops his body into the ocean.

[edit] Rose DeWitt Bukater

Born 1895

Died Unknown (1997)
Unknown

Rose DeWitt Bukater was born in 1895 and is 17 years old during her first class passage on the Titanic. She boards with her fiancé, Caledon, and her mother, Ruth. Rose doesn't love Caledon, but her mother pressures her into marriage so that they can regain their wealth.

While on board, Rose attempts suicide but a third class man named Jack Dawson brings her to her senses and saves her when she almost falls. Rose's screams from slipping on the railing attracted the attention of several crew members, who find Jack sprawled on top of Rose after he pulled her over from the edge. This suspicious situation almost has Jack arrested, but after a clarification in front of Cal, Mr. Lovejoy, and the ship's master-at-arms, Jack is recognized as a hero. As thanks, Caledon invites Jack to dine with the first-class.

The next day, Rose seeks Jack out to thank him for what he did. They talk on the boat deck for hours about what they want to do in their lives. Rose found him annoying but completely fasinating. When dinner comes, she watches as Jack charms the group with his life story, all except her Mother and Cal. At the end of the dinner, Jack passes Rose a note telling her to go to the Grand Staircase clock. When she goes there, Jack invites her to a third class "real party".

At the party, they get drunk and dance around, not seeing Cal's manservant Lovejoy spying on them. The next morning, Cal yells at her and tells her not to behave like that again. Then she goes back to her room to have her corset tightened by her maid. Her mother interrupts and tells her maid to fetch some tea. Ruth tells her daughter that she cannot see Jack again.

The next day, April 14th, she is walking on the boat deck with her mother, Cal and Thomas Andrews, the builder of the ship, when Jack grabs her and takes her into the gymnasium. He tries to talk to her, but she doesn't listen to him and goes back to the group.

Later, while having dinner, she realizes that she has made the wrong choice and finds Jack at the bow of the ship. She tried to listen to her mother but she could not resist. They share a special moment and have their first kiss while the sun goes down. Rose then takes Jack to the sitting room and asks him to draw her completely naked wearing only the diamond that Cal gave her. He does so. When he is done, he puts it in the safe. However, Lovejoy finds them and chases them all the way down to the boiler room of the ship, where they lock the door on him. They then venture into the cargo hold and make love with each other.

At 11:40 pm, they come back up to the bow of the ship and share another passionate kiss, while the ship hits an iceberg. Rose suggests telling her mother and Cal. When they do, Jack is framed for stealing the diamond and Rose is taken to a lifeboat with her mother. However, Rose runs away to save Jack. After receiving instructions from Mr. Andrews, she finds Jack in a rapidly flooding room on E Deck. She cuts his handcuffs with an ax and they make it back to the boat deck with Jack's friends, Tommy and Fabrizio.

While it lowers, at around 1:45 am, Rose jumps back on the ship and runs to the Grand Staircase, where she embraces Jack. Enraged, Cal chases them into the flooding reception room with a gun. In a deleted scene, Lovejoy continues the chase into the dining room.

The stern end is pulled into the air, sticking out of the water at a ninety degree angle, and it sinks into the water at 2:20 am.

In the water, Jack leads Rose to a a piece of wood in the water that she floats on. While he freezes in the water, Jack makes Rose promise that she will survive. Later, after Jack has died, she uses a whistle to call a lifeboat to save her. While on the Carpathia, she sees Caledon, who is looking for her desperately. Hiding her face in a blanket, she hopes he will not see her, and indeed he does not. That is the last time she ever sees him.

On arriving in New York, she takes Jack's name when asked by a steward, calling herself Rose Dawson, giving implications to the audience of her wife-like commitment to Jack and their plans for marriage. The name change also enables her to forever escape from her family and allowing them to think she is dead. She goes on to do everything that she had promised Jack she would do, riding astride a horse on the beach, going to Santa Monica Pier, flying a plane, and so forth. Rose eventually gets married and has children, but never forgets Jack.

[edit] Caledon Nathan Hockley

Caledon Nathan Hockley
Enraged, Caledon chases Jack and Rose with Lovejoy's gun.
Born 1882
United States of America
Died 1929
America

Born in 1882 as the son of American steel tycoon Nathan Hockley, Caledon "Cal" Nathan Hockley is on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic in order to marry his 17-year-old fiancée, Rose DeWitt Bukater. Rose does not want the marriage and considers Cal as a friend, but not as a suitable husband.

Unknown to Cal, while they are aboard the Titanic, Rose begins seeing Jack Dawson, a third class man who made her come to her senses when she tried to commit suicide. Later, Cal gives her a rare blue diamond called the Heart of the Ocean.

One night, Cal does not know where Rose is, so he sends Spicer Lovejoy, his manservant, to find her. He comes back telling him that he saw Jack and Rose in the third class general room dancing. The next morning, April 14th, Cal yells at Rose and tells her not to behave like that again. Later, he finds out that Rose has been gone for too long. He sends Lovejoy after them, and at around 11:30 pm, finds a nude drawing of Rose, signed by Jack Dawson, and a taunting note in his safe. When the ship hits an iceberg, Cal frames Jack for stealing the diamond. He then tries to get Rose into a lifeboat, but she instead goes to rescue Jack.

Realizing that the ship is starting to fall apart, Cal and Lovejoy focus on getting into a lifeboat. They return to Cal's suite and take some money out of the safe. They then return to the deck to bribe First Officer Murdoch for a place on Collapsible C. After giving him a pile of twenty dollar bills, Murdoch agrees to let him on the boat, but at the last second, Lovejoy tells Cal that he has found Rose waiting for a boat with Jack. Cal leaves his chance of escaping the ship to find her.

When he finds them, he gives Rose the jacket that he had put the diamond in, forgetting that the diamond is in it, and tells her that he and Jack will be able to escape the ship. When she gets in Lifeboat 2, she quickly jumps back onto the ship and embraces Jack at the Grand Staircase. Enraged, Cal takes Lovejoy's gun and begins shooting at them, chasing them down the Grand Staircase into the flooding reception room, where they escape into the dining room. When Cal reaches the reception room, he realizes that Rose has the diamond, but is scared to go into the flooding areas. In a deleted scene, he sends Lovejoy after them, "promising" to give him the diamond if he can retrieve it.

With Lovejoy occupied in finding the diamond, Cal makes it back to the deck in time to catch Collapsible A. However, Murdoch throws his money back at him, telling him "Your money can't save you any more than it can save me." , and denies Cal entry into the canvas boat, and his only chance at surviving the disaster. Murdoch then kills an innocent man who has been pushed toward the boat and commits suicide when he realizes that he has done so. While the boat is being loaded by Chief Officer Wilde, Cal grabs a little girl and shows her to the officer, claiming that he is all she has in the world. Wilde lets him on. Before the boat can be lowered however, the bow plunges into the water and the boat floats off.

While still near the ship, people try to get on the boat, but Cal fiercely denies entrance to the boat to anyone once it has been filled, claiming that they will swamp it. While doing this, he witnesses the collapse of the first funnel, but is able to row the boat away from the sinking ship and save himself along with the other people in the boat. He then watches as the Titanic sinks. In an earlier draft of the script, after the ship has sunk, Fabrizio tries to get onto Cal's boat, but Cal clubs him on the head with an oar. This was most probably changed in order to avoid making Hockley look more like a psychotic killer than an arrogant man.

On board the Carpathia, Rose sees him looking for her, seemingly concerned for her, but she decides not to reveal herself to him. After surviving the Titanic disaster, he marries someone and inherits his millions, but he never got over Rose's supposed "death." In 1929, according to Rose, he commits suicide by shooting himself in the mouth because of the Stock Market Crash ruining his interest.

[edit] Ruth DeWitt Bukater

Born Unknown

Died Unknown
Unknown

Ruth DeWitt Bukater is the mother of Rose DeWitt Bukater. She is set on having Rose marry Caledon Hockley to regain her status in society and to ensure her and Rose's survival in the life to which she has grown accustomed. It seems that her late husband's unexpected death and unknown debts left them in financial ruin. Therefore Ruth, in order to ensure their survival, forces Rose into a loveless match with Caledon.

When the Titanic crashes into an iceberg, she is put on Lifeboat 6 without her daughter, and is forced to watch as the ship sinks with her daughter still on it.

[edit] Spicer Lovejoy

Spicer Lovejoy
Lovejoy spies on Jack and Rose at the third class party.
Born 1850
London, England, UK
Died 1912
RMS Titanic

Spicer Lovejoy, a former Pinkerton detective, is the valet and bodyguard of Caledon Hockley. He accompanies Hockley, Rose and her mother Ruth on the Titanic, where he tells the porters where to put their luggage. Lovejoy most likely would have stayed in a different section with all the other passenger's servants, but he was never seen in his cabin in the film.

Later on, after Rose attempts to commit suicide and is saved by Jack, Lovejoy is seen tending to Rose along with Archibald Gracie. Once everyone starts to leave, Jack whistles at Lovejoy for a cigarette. After Jack takes two, Lovejoy looks down at Jack's shoes and tells him "You'll want to tie those." Despite seeing this little detail, he does not tell anyone, which probably would have kept Jack from getting arrested. Lovejoy is also ordered by Hockley to follow Rose wherever she goes, and he stumbles into the third class party, where he sees Rose dancing with Jack off-screen, Lovejoy informs Hockley of this, leading Hockley to warn Rose fiercely to behave properly with him (she refers to Lovejoy as "That undertaker of a manservant").

Once again, Hockley orders Lovejoy to follow Rose, and once again does he catch her with Jack. Having no sense of humor at all, Lovejoy angrily chases the laughing lovers all over the ship until finally losing them into the boiler rooms. Lovejoy reports back to Hockley, who finds the sketch of the nude Rose and a taunting note written by Rose. Enraged, Hockley makes a plan with Lovejoy to get back at Jack and Rose. After the ship hits an iceberg and starts to sink, Hockley orders Lovejoy to place his "Le Coeur de la Mer" diamond in Jack's pocket to frame him for theft. Even worse, Lovejoy discovers that the coat isn't even Jack's, and that it belongs to Arthur Ryerson, who reported his coat stolen earlier that day. The master-at-arms handcuffs him, takes him to his office, and locks Jack to a pole as Lovejoy stays to guard. Later he leaves, leaving Jack in the flooding room to drown. Eventually Rose comes to his rescue and saves him.

Lovejoy finds Cal on the boat deck, and he still hasn't found Rose. They then focus their attention to entering a lifeboat, and Cal returns to his suite to get some money. He then bribes First Officer Murdoch for a spot in Collapsible C. However, at the last minute, Lovejoy reports that he has found Jack and Rose waiting for a boat. In doing this, he seals his fate, as if he had kept his mouth shut, he would have gotten into the boat and escaped the sinking ship.

Later, when Cal sees Jack and Rose openly embracing in the Grand Staircase, he grabs Lovejoy's gun and chases them into the dining room. When he gets scared to go any further because of the rising water level, he leaves. In a deleted scene, Cal "promises" to give Lovejoy the diamond if he can get it. Lovejoy quietly calls him a bastard and reloads his pistol. He walks into the dining room, looking for Jack and Rose, who are hiding behind a table. As the dining room quickly floods, Lovejoy tries to draw them out by taunting them, but that doesn't work. However, Rose makes a splashing sound which leads Lovejoy to find her. Before he can shoot her though, Jack jumps out and smashes his head into a window. He then punches him in the stomach in revenge for framing him for stealing the necklace. After that, they run away before he can shoot them and he loses them.

Lovejoy returns to try to escape from the quickly sinking Titanic, but is too late. By the time he makes it back up to the boat deck, the lifeboats are all gone. He stays on the deck until the ship breaks apart right between him. He manages to hold on to the ship and avoid falling into the ocean, but due to his position, it is likely he ended up in the water just before the ship's final plunge.

Whether he died of hypothermia or was rescued remains unknown.

[edit] Margaret "Molly" Brown

Main article: Margaret Brown

Molly Brown.

Margaret "Molly" Brown is a first class passenger who Ruth classifies as "new money". When Jack is invited to dinner, she helps him out by giving him a tuxedo she bought for her son, and teaching him how to fit in with the other first class passengers.

When the ship hits an iceberg, she gets in Lifeboat 6. In a deleted scene, she sits in the palm court and asks for some ice. Behind her, the iceberg is seen in the window. After the sinking, she tells the other passengers in Lifeboat 6 that they have to go back to pick up others from the ship, but Quartermaster Robert Hichens overrules her for panic of being swamped.

[edit] Fabrizio De Rossi

Fabrizio tries to escape the sinking Titanic.

Fabrizio De Rossi was born in 1892 in Italy and is Jack Dawson's best friend. He believes that it is his destiny to go to America. When Jack wins the tickets, they board and meet Tommy Ryan, an Irish third class man.

When the ship hits an iceberg, he meets up with Jack at a locked gate. Jack, Rose, Fabrizio and Tommy Ryan join up and break down one of the locked gates, gaining entry to the higher points of the ship. When they reach the boat deck, Jack sends Fabrizio and Tommy to check the other side of the ship for boats that are letting men on.

Fabrizio and Tommy find Collapsible A, but First Officer Murdoch is fiercely denying entry to the boat to men. However, someone pushes Tommy toward Murdoch and before thinking, he shoots Tommy. When he realizes that he has killed an innocent man, he shoots himself in the head. The boat is loaded by a different officer, and Caledon Hockley is let on when he fakes being the parent of a child. Before the boat can be lowered, however, the water reaches the boat deck and the ship threatens to pull the boat under. Fabrizio helps cut the ropes off of the boat, but the water washes him away from it and he is crushed by the falling funnel.

In the original draft of the script, Fabrizio is murdered by Caledon Hockley when he tries to get into the arrogant steel magnate's boat. Hockley clubs Fabrizio fatally on the head with his oar. With his dying breaths, Fabrizio tells Hockley that he had to go to America. Hockley points into the distance and sarcastically says "It's that way!". Ultimately, this was changed to Fabrizio merely getting crushed by toppled funnel with his death witnessed by Hockley, mostly in order to avoid making Hockley look more like a psychotic killer than an arrogant man.

Rose is still alive at 101 years old.

Having survived the sinking, Rose lives the rest of her life doing the things that she and Jack talked about doing, like riding horses in Santa Monica, California, and becoming a motion picture actress. Eventually, falls in love with and marries a man named Calvert and moves to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to start a family.

In 1997, almost 101 years old and living with her granddaughter, Lizzy Calvert, the portrait Jack sketched of her is discovered in the wreck of the Titanic. After contacting the recovery crew, Rose is invited to go out to the scene, where a search is underway for the Heart of the Ocean. Even though Rose already knows where the diamond is, she tells no one. After telling her fellow shipmates her Titanic story, she walks to the stern and drops the diamond overboard. Then Rose goes back to bed. She kept every promise she had made to Jack, and did everything they ever talked about. Throwing the diamond into the ocean to its proper resting place was a way of showing she had finally let go.

In the alternate ending, when she is about to throw the diamond overboard, he granddaughter, Lizzy, sees her and mistakes her for getting ready to jump. She and Brock rush over and Rose says, "Stop! Don't come any closer! I'll drop it." She holds up the diamond. Brock is amazed and Lewis Bodine and Bobby Buell can be seen in the background. Rose tells Brock he is looking for treasure in the wrong places, only life is priceless. Brock asks to hold it. Rose lets him and then gently tugs on it. Brock grasps it tighter. Rose gives him a look as if to say, "You're not going to choose money over happiness, are you?" Rose doesn't force him to give up the Heart. Brock slowly lets her slide it out of his hands. She pulls it and throws it backwards, into the water. Brock, still astonished by what he just did, looks up and the sky with his hand in the same position and starts laughing. Lewis Bodine run up to the rail and says, "Real nice, lady!" Then Brock sees Lizzy and says, "You wanna dance?" and Lizzy shakes her head yes.[citation needed]

It has also been speculated that Rose dies in her sleep that night, when she returns to bed. Thus giving a reason for the final scene in which Rose and Jack kiss at the Grand Staircase with the before perished passengers and crew present.
