List of ships complement of HMS Hydra (A144) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

List of ships complement of HMS Hydra (A144)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of the complement - the ship's company (or crew) - for HMS Hydra (A144) between 1980-1983. It is typical, however, of the Hecla class survey vessels (ocean survey ships) during normal peacetime surveying operations, enhanced to show additional medical and chaplaincy staff embarked for the Falklands War - Operation Corporate - in 1982.

From September 1981, HMS Hydra's (A144) ship's company, of about 120 officers and men, changed little for a year, with a few routine changes in March 1982 and, notably, the addition of four wartime medical staff in April 1982. All 129 of the ship's company involved in Operation Corporate in 1982 (marked with an ‡) are listed and all were awarded the South Atlantic Medal (see [1]), with rosette, engraved with their rank, name and ship's name. Thus the symbol ‡ shows all 129 of those who formed the ship's company from April to September 1982. Names in italics are officers qualified in Hydrographic surveying.

Midshipman Mike Meacher is now a Royal Navy Chaplain of the Free Church, Lieutenant-Commander Geoff Geraghty a Commodore in the Royal Australian Navy and Lieutenant Abraham Lucose a Commodore in the Indian Navy - see photo at [9]).

In his book The Bogus Surveyor or a Short History of a Peculiar People by Whitewash (1887), surveying assistant Lieutenant C H A Gleig writes, in chapter III, "The Idlers - the most miserable people on board a surveying vessel - are the Paymaster, the Doctor and the Chief Engineer. They have no interest in surveying, and consequently dislike the isolated life which they are compelled to lead for about nine months in the year. Their growls, both loud and deep, resound through the after part of the ship; "like Rachel weeping for her children" they cannot possibly be comforted. If only a fourth Idler were carried, the case would be less hopeless, as they might wile away the weary hours by playing whist, but such is seldom the case; and then again seeing so much of each other, deadly quarrels are no uncommon thing. We see no reason, however, why whist should not be resorted to even under these painful circumstances, if only there were a fourth party, but there's the rub: On no account should the young surveyor allow himself to be made use of to supply the missing link, such a course would be absolutely fatal to his future prospects; he might as well take to playing the fiddle or even pitch and toss ...". Lieutenant Gleig was heard of no more after he left HMS Rambler, a short time after his book was published! (From The Admiralty Chart: British naval hydrography in the nineteenth century by G S Ritchie (Hollis & Carter, 1967)).

[edit] Statistics - numbers by rank and rating and by department

These statistics refer only to the 129 ship's company on board during Operation Corporate in 1982, four of whom were additional medical staff. The ship's complement, or ship's company, of HMS Hydra was usually stated as being 115 officers and men; nevertheless, these statistics will provide a guide to the make up of the ship's company throughout her service in the Royal Navy, from 1966 to 1986, and also for the other three Hecla class survey vessels.

Ship's company of 18 officers, 109 ratings and 2 civilians:

Ship's company - numbers in each department:

  • Commanding Officer - 1 Commander and in charge of hydrographic surveying
  • Executive department - 47: First Lieutenant + 9 officers + 2 CPO + 3 PO + 5 LR + 25 AB + 2 OD (of which 7 were hydrographic surveying officers and 1 CPO + 3 LR + 7 AB were survey recorders)
  • Ship's Flight (415 Flight) - 7: Flight Commander + 2 CPO + 1 PO + 3 LR (including photographer)
