Living with the Abyss is a science fiction/cyberpunk comic by Jared Lane published as the main story in his annual anthology Progress sine 2001 (though work on the story began in 1993). The story is set in Christchurch, New Zealand some time in the late 21st century, it is depicted as a dystopian city ruled by powerful corporations and dealing with the effects of rising sea levels. Lane describes his reasons for writing the comic as "want[ing] to show a punky, futuristic dystopian New Zealand. In particular Christchurch, my home town, plunged into a dark future by New Zealand's destructive free market policies of the 90s"[1]. The plot follows Nathan, a cleaner at Canterbury University, his girlfriend Jasmin Woo, their friend Chester and an android found in the university engineering deparment which claims to be Jasmin.
