[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Voting for Biography collaboration of the week

Hi, the article Sheikh Hasina has been nominated for voting at "Biography collaboration of the week". What this will do is that for a week, people of the team would contribute to make the article enriched, balanced and complete. Since this is an article about a Bangladeshi politician and a rich article would promote Bangladesh and Bengal more, I think regardless of political beliefs we can vote for it. Even if you are opposed to her political ideology, you can be sure that both her positive and negative sides would be presented in a Collaboration of the week article. Please vote at Wikipedia:Biography Collaboration of the Week#Sheikh Hasina .28July_21.29 by signing your name with # ~~~~ . Thanks. --Ragib 21:40, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Categories

Hi! There's no need to have Subhash Chandra Bose under the category: category:History of India. category:Indian freedom fighters is a sub category of the category: category:History of India, so in effect it is under the history of India category. The History of India category is used for the Magadha, Middle kingdoms of India, Indus Valley Civilisation etc., not for people. Please do not add the category to such pages. Thanks. [edit] Discussion vs action

Hi, in the future, when you see a discussion such as at Talk:Battle of Plassey about the article title where there is a clear result from discussion not to move, you should not take it upon yourself to go against the result and move it anyway. At the very least, you should have weighed in on the discussion yourself first, giving your reasons Stan 02:34, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ganguly image

Hello Lord Gulliver,

I saw your photo of Ganguly. You gave the source, which is good, but you didn't give any copyright information.

Almost all images are copyright, and we can't use them, unless the photographer has explicitly granted permission. So it's not good enough just to find a photo on the web and state its source: you also have to give one of the copyright tags to say what licence it's under. Without this, the photo is in danger of being deleted after seven days.

Thanks very much,

Stephen Turner 16:04, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Hello again. I've now listed the Ganguly image for deletion. But the same comments apply to all of your other images too. They all need valid copyright tags.
I'm sorry about that when you've made an effort to find good images. The articles do look better with them, but unfortunately it's illegal to include copyright images, and as one of the most high-profile sites on the web, we're likely to get sued if we do.
Thanks.

[edit] Image:Azad hind.jpg has been listed for deletion

An image that you uploaded, Image:Azad hind.jpg, has been listed in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion because it lacks source or license information, and has been tagged as lacing this information for at elast 7 days. See Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Images/Media (criterion I4) Please add source and copyright information to this image promptly, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

[edit] Santniketan

Hi! You removed the NPoV label from Santiniketan. Do not you think that the statement The generally disreputable state of affairs perpetuated by the West Bengal government, communist and totally corrupt has not helped matters is a biased statement and should be modified?Thanks.--Dwaipayanc 16:46, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Dwaipayanc Frankly speaking, I don't think that Wikipedia is a venue for making personal or political statements, however truthful they are or may seem to be. I agree with you that the same facts can be presented in a less offensive roundabout manner that may perhaps be more Wikipedially pertinent, more newsworthy and less subjective. The section on problems seems to be more politically motivated and seems to represent the bias of a single reviewer. As you cited, we all know that The generally disreputable state of affairs perpetuated by the West Bengal government, communist and totally corrupt has not helped matters. Big deal. So what? The fact of the matter is that cash rich city boys (read Marwaris) and their corrupt uncultured Communist brethren / party bigwigs have converted Santiniketan into a happy hunting ground for drugs, sex, porn, HIV, AIDS... the list goes on... Probably before the end of this century, Santiniketan will be as dirty, dingy, gloomy and shitty as Calcutta.. a metaphor for everything that is negative in the Third World... But does anyone really care? Money and culture are opposite sides of the same coin in the West. As Pierre Bourdieu says, those who have money acquire social capital, cultural capital and power. In Bengal, the reverse seems to be true. Cash rich kids have no taste for culture. In fact their "culture", one that is coterminous with BJP/RSS chauvinism and Bollywood porn finds Tagore an oddity and would rather be too happy to convert Visva-Bharati to an extended jute mill and its academics to the equivalent of manual laborers. LordGulliverofGalben

I understand your point. But at the same time, Wikipedia is not the place for shouting one's point of view. If you want to put a comment potentially debatablr, you should give references. You give some recognized reference for the comment that The generally disreputable state of affairs perpetuated by the West Bengal government, communist and totally corrupt has not helped matters, and it would be accepted subject to the verifiability of the reference. That W.B. govt is communist need not any references, but "totally corrupt" needs ! --Dwaipayanc 11:20, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Dwaipayanc, Thanks for your response. I understand your POV. But the aforesaid line (The generally disreputable state of affairs perpetuated by the West Bengal government, communist and totally corrupt has not helped matters) was not my contribution in the first place, but that of someone called Ishanb on 2nd January 2006. Please refer to his/ her contribution on that date. This person even made it autobiographical by adding the following:

"Santiniketan is still my home, but the idyllic existence envisioned by Tagore (and my grandfather, Amiya Chakravarty, who was Tagore's secretary and a poet in his own right) is rapidly disappearing"

I had to reduce that. As regards the article, do what you think is best. Regards, LordGulliverofGalben

[edit] Peer review Kolkata

Hi! A request has been made for peer review of Kolkata. Could you please help improving the article? Thanks a lot.--Dwaipayanc 11:14, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Sure buddy, more than willing to help.

Thanks for the alphabetical organisation of the template on topics related to Kolkata. I was thinking to do the same, but so busy in creating articles related to Kolkata that I could not find time! Kolkata needs a lot of supportive articles (espesially in the administrative, economic and cultural aspects), as we are trying to pass through Peer Review, and without good supporting articles, the main article fails to stand solidly. Thank you.--Dwaipayanc 03:14, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] University of Calcutta

Since you edit the article frequently, have you thought about revamping the article in a proper way?--Dwaipayanc 10:16, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

How? I think it is better as it is. Including list of all affiliated other institutions would make it rather a boring piece. LordGulliverofGalben

But I see the logo is there.--Dwaipayanc 18:38, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding revamp

I did not mean just enlisting all the affiliated institutions. Please see articles like Indian Institute of Technology. I meant revamping like that.--Dwaipayanc 18:41, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Dwaipayanc Understood, but I do not have the resources to help much on that. I am not based in Kolkata. So I can not do field work to collect more data, on the University. The Town Hall has some excellent collections on the University, especially the changing logos of the University and the Dept. of English (PG) at the Ashutosh Building, at College Street has made 19th century Bengal-Britain cultural interactions its speciality area. Particularly the PG Department at the MPhil/ PhD level might prove helpful. They have excellent sources of information. You may contact Tirtha Prasad Mukherjee, Debapriya Paul, and Anandarup Biswas on this. They are very helpful, only not very Internet savvy, I'm afraid so. If you revamp, the article will need lots of good quality photographs , on the Museum, Library, all the campuses, on its alumni (don't forget Kadambini Ganguly, Chandramukhi Basu and also if possible Binodini Dasi I don't know how that's possible, BTW !!!), on its future potential and direction, its contribution to the political, social and cultural life of modern India. Also I believe that an article on the List of academic institutions formerly affiliated to the University of Calcutta may be started. But then, don't go overboard as CU and IIT Kharagpur are two totally different institutions. Each has its own significance and historical, social and cultural relevance.

I know that it is quite fashionable to criticise CU for all the ills that plague the educational system in West Bengal. But then, much as I was critical of CU when I was a student, when I compare its alumni to those of other institutes both from India and abroad, I can appreciate the fact that for all the endless repertory of ills that plague it, its alumni are still a force to reckon with, if nowhere else, then at least in the academia. LordGulliverofGalben

[edit] Reply

Hi! Sorry for the delay in replying. In fact, it would be better if you reply to my comment in my talk page , then I will be able to reply promptly. Regarding the article on kolkata University, I would be very much intersted to do what you suggested. However, at present, I am busy with my own works and also some other wikipedia articlws like Darjeeling. I shall be somewhat free in July. I will try then. Meanwhile you can continue improving the article from resources available in the web.

The persons you named, how to contact them? Are they available in the museum of the university? You can email me in this adress: contactdc@gmail.com.

Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 08:55, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Response

I apologise for the delay in responding. The persons I named are associated with the Dept. of English, CU at the Ashutosh Building Third Floor. But one request: please do not refer to me, should you personally contact them. As I see it, I am currently an "outcaste" within that community. Thanks for sharing your email and assigning a category to my ID. However I would rather prefer anonymity, as of now. You see, I have my own reasons. LordGulliverofGalben

Huh, how could I give a reference to you, as I even do not know who you are. In any case, should you think you are better comfortable in emailing me rather than go public in this talk pages, you are welcome. I may contact those persons in July-August as before that I shall not be free. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 11:27, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Netflix

Hello, I was wondering why you edited the Netflix section on Red Envelope Entertainment to feature the film Charulata instead of the one I listed? My citation states that Born into Brothels is a Red Envelope film, but I can't find a citation that Charulata is. --Mus Musculus 02:58, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Got your point. I believe Fahrenheit 9/11 is available through the Red Envelope Entertainment as well. And yes, Charulata is also available through Netflix. Only, the delivery time is longer. Thanks, LordGulliverofGalben

Do you have a source for the Red Envelope/Fahrenheit claim? This was with Miramax until the big fuss with their Disney parent, and was picked up by Lions Gate for distribution. I'm not sure where Netflix would come into the picture? - David Oberst 06:01, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
I think you're missing the idea here - the section is not about movies that are available through Netflix - that includes almost every DVD out there. This section is about films that are specifically licensed and distributed through this special Netflix company, which is only a handful of films. Most films have their own distributors who sell DVDs to Netflix. I'm going to change the movie referenced back to Born into Brothels; please don't change it again unless you have a citation that the film you put in is distributed by Red Envelope. Thanks! Mus Musculus 12:12, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] On Netflix

OK I agree to the finer technical details. But my point was: since Wikipedia serves almost as a free source of information for the uninitiated like me, any information that is there, is likely to be uncritically accepted. Born into Brothels in my opinion is a bad film, whose sole claim to credit lies in the theme of poverty/charity tourism. It is solely meant for an audience who have never been to Calcutta, after seeing it probably they never will. Calcutta is not the only city to have its ills. The slums of Dharavi in Mumbai, Kibera, Ahmedabad and elsewhere in the Third World have much worse conditions than those prevailing in Calcutta. Just because Calcutta is liberal enough to allow filmmakers to shoot films like City of Joy or Born into Brothels, does not mean that that city is a repository to everything bad or abhorrent that there can be in the Third World. Contrarily, it is a much better managed and much more humane city. The same claim to liberal outlook can not be necessarily extended to other cities in India (except perhaps Mumbai; even then Mira Nair had to face a lot of trouble while shooting Salaam Bombay), which are not kind enough to many western filmmakers. And yet, its relegation to being the metaphor for everything that there can be negative in this world, has less to do with the choice of its own people than to its unique legacy of history. If you have to give another example on alternative filmmaking, why not try Rent (film)? I was under the impression that Fahrenheit 9/11 would be a good example of alternative filmmaking, that would resonate with the largely US based Wikipedians. And yes, I would a greatly appreciate a better example (than Born into Brothels) in the Netflix article. Thanks LordGulliverofGalben

[edit] Kirti Narayan Chaudhuri

A tag has been placed on Kirti Narayan Chaudhuri, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add hangon on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.
