Lowellville, Ohio

Lowellville is a village located in Mahoning County, Ohio, in the "Steel Valley" area of the northeast part of the state, southeast of Youngstown. The village is an older, predominantly Italian-American, working-class community built along the banks of the Mahoning River, and centered around the once productive Sharon Steel works. The population was 1,281 at the 2000 census.

Lowellville is located at (41.039592, -80.540165)GR1, and sits on the Pennsylvania-Ohio border, just west of Mahoningtown, Hillsville, and New Castle, Pennsylvania.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,281 people, 520 households, and 344 families residing in the village. The population density was 343.5/km² (891.4/mi²). There were 553 housing units at an average density of 148.3/km² (384.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.22% White, 0.08% African American, 0.08% Asian, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.41% of the population.
Though Lowellville is 99.22% "White," it is a very ethnic community. Most of the area's residents are Catholic Italian-Americans and Slavic peoples, with rich, "old world" roots. Locals are very proud of what they refer to as their "nationality" (heritage).
There were 520 households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 32.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the village the population was spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $29,565, and the median income for a family was $38,000. Males had a median income of $34,167 versus $22,188 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,422. About 5.8% of families and 9.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.9% of those under age 18 and 8.1% of those age 65 or over.
