MacDonald 80 Shopping Center
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The MacDonald 80 Shopping Center is a medium sized defunct shopping center in the Central Richmond Richmond, California undergoing redevelopment. Originally built in 1959 it featured a large Montgomery Wards, a Toys 'R' Us, bank, and a few other small business in a large parcel nestled between a residential neighborhood, a high traffic corridor (Interstate 80), and BART tracks. Over the years the toy store closed, and then the department store went bankrupt nationally and this location closed during one of the last waves of mass closings of store locations. The center is located on the corner of the city's many west-east trunk road, MacDonald Avenue. It is currently being redeveloped. The new name will be Macdonald 80 Retail Center. This development is part of a citywide redevelopment effort and will turn the old Wards into a Target. The project's sponsor is SPI Management, LLC. The bulk of the current buildings will be demolished in favor of replacement ones for a new shopping center/office complex.
The new buildings will total 215,682 square feet of new and or remodeled space. These will include a new freestanding structures: a new Target with garden center at 146,432 sq. ft., "Pad B" with 10,000 sq. ft., and "Pad A" with 53,250 sq. ft. and a remodeled Mechanics Bank with 6,000 sq. ft.
