The Madagascan Pygmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis madagascariensis or Hexaprotodon madagascariensis) is an extinct species of pygmy hippopotamus that lived on the island of Madagascar. It is the closest relative of the pygmy hippos that live today in Western Africa.
Other hippos existed on the island of Madagascar including a seperate species the Madagascan Dwarf Hippopotamus (H. Lemerlei), sometimes called Lemerle's Hippopotamus. Both species are sometimes referred to as the Malagasy Dwarf Hippopotamus.
