Magnum XL-200 is a steel roller coaster located at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. Built in 1989 by Arrow Dynamics, it was the first complete circuit roller coaster to break the 200 foot barrier. The Magnum is a hyper coaster as well as an out and back roller coaster. The first three hills will take you "out". The ride then performs a high speed pretzel turn-around and races "back" through a series of tunnels and bunny hills. The Magnum, which often appears on coaster enthusiasts' Top-10 lists, gives riders a view of Lake Erie from its almost mile-long track. Many park goers find Magnum XL-200 to be a good alternative to the higher profile rides such as Millennium Force and Top Thrill Dragster. Theme Park Goers have reported to being able to ride Magnum XL-200 up to 12 times an hour, while Top Thrill Dragster and Millennium Force can have lines up to two hours long.
Although every seat on the train provides an exciting, intense ride, many of Magnum XL-200's frequent riders prefer to ride in the third row of the first car. This seat is nicknamed the "ejector seat" due to the many moments of intense airtime throughout the ride. Ironically, this seat often has the shortest wait of the entire train due to the awkwardly designed loading platform.
Magnum XL-200 has been the target of false rumors claiming that the structure was sinking due to unstable ground and that plans were to disassemble the ride and sell it to either a Japanese theme park, or a Six Flags park. This rumor supposedly started as an April Fools Day joke in an Ohio newspaper, but quickly spread via the Internet. Cedar Point has denounced such rumors.
Cedar Fair, LP CEO Dick Kinzel has been quoted as saying he was one of the few to ride Magnum's first train, boarding the train after only one test cycle.
During late 2005/early 2006, the front half of Magnum was repainted to Moly Orange, with the second half maintaining its original scarlet red paint. Though the transition of colors is hardly noticeable, Magnum is technically two toned, similar to the current paint job on Shockwave at Drayton Manor Theme Park. The ride's paint job was completed in 2006.
