Marco Aurélio, full name: Marco Aurélio Brito dos Prazeres, also known as Mehmet Aurélio (born December 15, 1977 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Turkish football player of Brazilian descent. He is a midfielder currently playing for Fenerbahçe. Formerly a Brazilian national, he recently acquired Turkish citizenship and consequently adopted the name Mehmet.[1]
Aurélio used to play as an attacking midfielder before his arrival to Fenerbahçe - where he is playing in a more defensive role. Aurélio is considered a good organizer in the midfield and his high work rate makes him an integral part of the team.
He has committed himself to Fenerbahçe for three more years after re-signing post-2005/06 season. With an official announcement from the TFF, it has been stated that non-Turkish players playing in Turkey for five consecutive years will be treated the same way as Turkish-born players, meaning, if selected and willing they will be able to represent Turkey internationally.
On August the 11th, 2006, Marco (Mehmet) Aurélio was called up to join the Turkish national team squad by the coach Fatih Terim for the friendly match against Luxembourg that took place on 16 August. Thereby, Aurélio became the first naturalized player to be capped in the history of Turkish national soccer team.[2]
