[edit] Athletics
Marina's athletic teams are known as the Vikings and the school colors are columbia blue, dark blue, and gold. They compete in the Sunset League of the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section. Marina has no on-campus stadium and plays most of its football home games at nearby Westminster High School.
In 2005, Marina's Varsity Field Hockey team played an undefeated season of 13-0 and took both the Sunset League Championship as well as the CIF Championship.
In 2007, Marina's Varsity Basketball team broke the California mark for three-pointers made in a game, twice hitting 28 in a contest, and later broke the national high school record for threes in a season when Mike Kinoshita sank No. 383 in a Feb. 2 win over rival Edison High. The Vikings would finish the year with 437.
[edit] Academic Decathlon
Marina High School is noted in Orange County for its outstanding achievments in the United States Academic Decathlon (U.S.A.D.). Marina's Academic Decathlon team, known locally as MAD, placed first in the Division One Orange County Academic Decathlon competition in 2001, 2002, and 2003. In addition, Marina's Academic Decathlon team placed first in the Orange County academic decathlon Super-Quiz relay competition in 2001, 2002, and 2005.
[edit] Recent Notable Alumni
Vanessa Laine Bryant, wife of Los Angeles Lakers All-Star Kobe Bryant graduated from Marina High School in 2000. The couple started dating while Vanessa was a senior at Marina. Bryant would occasionally drop off or pick up Laine from school in his black Mercedes Benz roadster. This caused such a media frenzy that Marina High School's administration eventually had to ban Bryant from both school grounds and from Marina High School's senior prom.
