Matosinhos (pron. IPA: [mɐtu'ziɲuʃ]) is a Portuguese city and municipality. It is bordered to the south by the city of Porto and lies within the Greater Porto area. The city includes the parishes (freguesias) of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, and has a population of 28,488 (2001); the municipality has a population of 168,451 in 10 parishes.
The city was the place of birth of the architect Siza Vieira. It was also the place of death of the poet Florbela Espanca that is also the name of the local "biblioteca". Matosinhos is located in the seacoast what makes the city a very good place to live. In the last decades the city became modern and dynamic calling the atention of people. Since then many people start to move from the surroundings to live in Matosinhos or in its other parishes. The city is caracterized by its good commercial services and very good weather mainly on summer. Althoug the quality of the beaches of Matosinhos has been contested many people still go there in the hot days of spring and summer. The main hospital of the north of Portugal is located in Matosinhos. The hospital Pedro Hispano serves the whole Porto metropolitan area and it's known for its good services.
