Maziar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Iranian (Hyrcanian - nowadays Mazandaran) freedom fighter revolting against the Arabo-Muslim occupation of Iran in the 9th century CE. His family traced their lieage to the Ispahbahd clan, and were local rulers of the mountainous region of Mazandaran. A devout Zoroastrian, he fought against the spread of Islam in Persia (modern Iran).
Along with Babak Khorramdin, he repulsed many Muslim-Arab armies sent against him. Maziar is one the national heroes of Iran.
He was eventually betrayed by his brother Kuhyar and captured by Arab forces. He was imprisoned in Baghdad awaiting execution when he drank poison and ended his life, in order to avoid humiliation at the hands of the Caliph's executioners.
Maziar or Mah-Izad-Yar means protected by the God of the moon.
