The MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) is a college athletic conference whose member schools compete in men's volleyball. Its member institutions are located in the Midwestern United States, stretching from Iowa in the west to Pennsylvania in the east.
Many of the conference's schools also participate in the similarly-named Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association in men's volleyball at the club level.
The MIVA Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the semifinals of the NCAA: National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship which consists of 4 teams who play single elimination to determine the National Champion. The two other major volleyball conferences, the EIVA (Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) and the MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) also send their league tournament champions to the National Semifinals.

[edit] MIVA History
The MIVA was founded on February 4, 1961 when seven schools, Ball State Teachers College, Detroit Institute of Technology, Earlham College, George Williams College, Michigan State University, The Ohio State University and Wittenberg College all met in East Lansing, Michigan on the campus of Michigan State University. The purpose of the meetings was to successfully organize a collegiate volleyball conference.[1]
Various schools have joined and/or left the MIVA during its history.
The MIVA is the oldest volleyball-only conference in the United States and was the first men’s volleyball conference in the country.
[edit] MIVA Format Change
The 2006 season began with a change in the regular season conference format. Two new divisions were created. The top tier Shondell/Dunlap Division comprises 7 teams: Ball State, IPFW, Lewis, Loyola, Ohio State, Quincy, and Mercyhurst. The lower tier Coleman Division comprises 4 teams: Carthage, Central State, Clarke, and MSOE.
These two divisions are named in honor of former head coaches in the MIVA.
Dr. Don Shondell posted an overall record of 769-280-6 in 34 seasons as the head coach at Ball State. He won 19 MIVA Championships and 12 MIVA Tournament Championships.
Karl Dunlap had a 74-15-1 record in four years as the head coach at Ohio State. He won one MIVA Championship and over MIVA Tournament Championship. His 1969 team was undefeated at 24-0.
Jim Coleman was the head coach at George Williams College in 1973, 1974 and 1976, winning the NAIA National Championship in 1974. He became the second-ever head coach for the USA men's national team and led the team to the 1968 Olympics. He coached until 1970, again in 1979-80 and once more in 1990. Coleman was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1992. George Williams College no longer participates in varsity Men's Volleyball.
The MIVA previously used a two division format (East and West Divisions) in 1998.

The MIVA was divided into two divisions for the start of the 2006 season. The Shondell/Dunlap Division (initially named the A-League or "A" Division) comprises 7 teams from the NCAA's Division I and Division II. The member institutions of this league are consistently ranked among the best men's volleyball teams in the United States in the CSTV/AVCA Division I-II Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll.

The lower tier of the MIVA is the Coleman Division (initially named the B-League or "B" Division). These schools, with the exception of Central St., are eligible for the CSTV/AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll. Central St. is a Division II school with provisional status in the MIVA for 2006.
