The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) is a private university located in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. MSOE is best known for its applications-oriented curriculum, close association with business and industry, and low student-to-teacher ratio. In 2004, MSOE's 210,000 square foot Kern Center was completed, adding a hockey arena, basketball arena, fitness center, running track and field house to its downtown campus. The university has an enrollment of more than 2,400 undergraduate and graduate students as of fall 2006.
For 2007, MSOE was again among U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges and Universities in the country, ranking 9th in the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs category, among colleges whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s. Also, MSOE’s B.S. in Industrial Engineering degree was ranked 4th among Engineering Specialties in the Industrial/Manufacturing category.[1]
MSOE's logo was designed by Brooks Stevens, a noted industrial engineer. Stevens created the familiar red and white logo for "The Diamond Jubilee" celebration in 1978.[2]

[edit] Academics
The curricula at MSOE are centered around engineering, engineering technology, nursing, computers and business. MSOE's primary focus is on undergraduate education, however, they do offer seven master's programs. In 2006, MSOE had 121 full-time faculty members, 64% of whom held a doctoral degree. The current student to faculty ratio is 12:1.[3] In 2003, 65% of applicants were admitted and 439 students enrolled out of 1809 applicants.[4]

MSOE has seven full-time Bachelor of Science programs in engineering: architectural, biomedical, computer, electrical, industrial, mechanical, and software. A part-time engineering degree is also offered. MSOE's Rader School of Business offers degrees in business, international business, management and management information systems. Additional four-year undergraduate programs are nursing, construction management, and technical communication. Two-year transfer programs leading to B.S. degrees are offered in electrical and mechanical engineering technology and management.
MSOE confers master's degrees in cardiovascular studies, engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, medical informatics, perfusion and structural engineering.
[edit] Study-Abroad Programs
- Fachhochschule Lübeck in Germany: This is a junior year exchange program for Electrical Engineering, International Business and Mechanical Engineering students with all courses taught in English. Students matriculating through this program receive degrees from both universities.[5]
- Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic: This exchange program is open to various majors, including Architectural Engineering students. All courses are taught in English.[6]

- MSOE is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA, 30 N. LaSalle St., Suite 2400, Chicago, IL 60602, (312) 263-0456).
- Programs in engineering and engineering technology, as appropriate, are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) or the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, Maryland 21202; Telephone: (410) 347-7700.
- The baccalaureate program in nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036; phone (202) 887-6791 and has full approval of the Wisconsin Board of Regulation and Licensing, 1400 E. Washington, Madison, WI, 53703.
- The baccalaureate program in construction management is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE), 1300 Hudson Lane, Suite 3, Monroe LA 71201-6054; phone: (318) 323-2816.
- The master of science in perfusion is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), 35 East Wacker Dr., Suite 1970, Chicago, IL 60601-2208.
[edit] Athletics
The mascot at MSOE is Roscoe Raider and the school colors are red and white. MSOE athletic teams compete in NCAA Division III. Men's varsity sports consist of baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, golf, ice hockey, soccer, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. Women's varsity sports are basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. A wide variety of club and intramural sports are also offered.[7]
MSOE recently completed construction on the Kern Center, which houses the sports teams' facilities, along with recreational areas for students and the Student Life department.

At the dawn of the 20th century, new occupations emerged in technical fields as the use of electrical and mechanical power was greatly accelerated. Engineers and technicians were in great demand, but few people were available who had the formal education and technical training. Industry's need spurred the development of progressive programs of technical education.
In this context, Oscar Werwath organized the School of Engineering of Milwaukee in 1903. Werwath was a practicing engineer who graduated from European technical schools in the late 19th Century. He was the first person to plan an American educational institution based on an applications-oriented curriculum.[8]
From the beginning, leaders of business and industry cooperated in the institution's development, and a close relationship was established that has continued throughout MSOE's history.[9]
[edit] Buildings
In 1980, MSOE's newly constructed Walter Schroeder Library was dedicated by former U.S. President Gerald Ford.[10] In addition to the library, the building houses numerous classrooms plus faculty and administrative offices for three academic departments.
In 1987, MSOE acquired the building that would be dedicated as the Student Life and Campus Center in 1991. It was built in the 1940s and once housed offices and the bottling plant of Blatz Brewery.[11]
In 1989, MSOE acquired the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company Office Building, converting it into the Alumni Partnership Center.[12]
In 2004, MSOE opened the Kern Center, its newly constructed athletics and fitness facility.
In 2006, MSOE acquired the former Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, located at 304 E. State Street and is in the process of renovating it for use as an art museum to host the Man at Work: The Eckhart G. Grohmann Collection, as well as faculty offices.

- The Fall 2005 male to female ratio was about 5:1 (17% women) for undergraduate enrollment.[16]
- Graduating from MSOE is considered by many to be a badge of honor; the curriculum is demanding.
- MSOE has more laboratories than classrooms.[17]
- Johnson Controls, which is based in Milwaukee, has a history of supporting MSOE with donations & lab equipment.
- Graduation is guaranteed in four years for students who stay on track.[18]
- All courses are taught by professors. MSOE does not use teaching assistants.
- MSOE has more than 18,000 alumni and 26 alumni chapters around the country.
- The 2006-07 tuition cost for a full-time student was $24,960.[19]
- In 1993, MSOE awarded an honorary doctorate degree to actor James Doohan, who potrayed Montgomery Scott ("Scotty"), the famed chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original Star Trek television series and movies.[20]
