Military Forces is a free, open source standalone game built upon the Quake III Arena code base. Primarily developed by Björn Drabeck, Military Forces is the third incarnation of the Air Quake series and builds upon the experience of AirQuake I by Iikka Keränen and the AirQuake II team, many of whom have contributed to the current effort. Despite the name change given to distance the game from the Air Quake series, due to the larger role Land and Sea units now have, game play remains largely a simplified arcade style far from the realism shown in many combat simulators.
Players can choose from Fighters, Bombers, Light and Heavy Armoured Ground vehicles, Helicopters and Infantry units in various configurations from three different eras. Vehicles are controlled via a third person perspective with the exception of Infantry remaining in the first person. Currently the game features game modes derived from the Quake III Arena code: Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch and Deathmatch. When complete the In-Game mission editor and scripting system will allow custom scenarios to be created while allowing the placement of static objects such as props, SAM installations and dummy vehicles.
Development is community driven and a skeleton team exists to provide a direction of focus, judge the quality of submissions, maintain the website, and handle the content distribution. Most media and content contributions are accepted.
In 2005, upon the release of the Quake III Arena code under GPL, development has shifted in creating a standalone version rather than a mod. The game dropped the Quake 3 suffix in Military Forces Quake 3 name and effort has went into replacing dependent media, overhauling the netcode and converting the source code into a better C++ object oriented design. Additionally virtual machine and dll based modification support has been removed, integrating the mod directly into the engine for increased speed and development ability.
