MinamiKanbara District, Niigata

Minamikanbara (南蒲原郡; -gun) is a district located in Niigata, Japan.
When the district was formed back in the Meiji Period, the district covered the cities of Sanjo and Mitsuke, the town of Tagami, and parts of Kamo and the northern part of Nagaoka.
Sanjo (part of the new city of Sanjo) was once part of Minamikanbara District until January 1, 1934 when Sanjo gained city status. The cities of Mitsuke and Kamo were formed by merging the surrounding areas, including the former respective towns of Mitsuke and Kamo, back in 1954. With the town of Nakanoshima merged into the city of Nagaoka in April 1, 2005, and in the same year of May 1 when the munis of Sakae and Shitada merged with the city of Sanjo to create a new city, Higashikanbara District has only the town of Tagami left.
As of 2005, the district had an estimated population of 13,502. The total area was 31.77 km².
The district has only one town.
