The original Route 36 was one of the original Missouri state highways commissioned in 1922. Its western terminus was at the Kansas state line west of Mindenmines, the eastern terminus was at Route 14 west of Springfield. It became part of U.S. Route 160 in 1930, though part of the highway is now Missouri Supplemental Route AB.
