Mitchell May

Mitchell May (July 10, 1870 - March 24, 1961) was a United States Representative from New York. Born in Brooklyn, he attended the public schools and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He graduated from the law department of Columbia University in 1892, was admitted to the bar in 1893, and commenced practice in Brooklyn.
May was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress, holding office from March 4, 1899 to March 3, 1901. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1900 to the Fifty-seventh Congress and from 1906 to 1910 was a member of the New York City Board of Education. He was assistant district attorney of Kings County in 1910 and 1911, and was secretary of state of New York in 1913 and 1914. He was county judge of Kings County from 1916 to 1921, and was justice of the New York supreme court from January 1, 1922 to December 31, 1940, when he retired because of age limitation. He resumed the practice of law and died in Brooklyn. Interment was in Valhalla Cemetery, Staten Island.
