The film was one of the major hits of 1994 in India, and the music was also a huge hit the same year. Film Producer Aneesh Kadakia has claimed the song "Tu cheez badi hai mast mast" to be one of the ten most significant Hindi film songs of the 90s. The song was a rehash of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's famous qawali Mast Qalandar.
[edit] Story
The film's first scene is in a jail where a "big time" gangster is arrested and brought to jail. He is being taken to his cell by 15+ men, because he is very dangerous. The Inspector pushes him into the cell and up against the wall. He then says to the Inspector who is terrified of him "You Mouse! You threw me against the wall! Don't you know my crime history?" As the Inspector undoes his handcuffs so he can leave the cell, the gangster grabs him, throws him against the wall and injures 5 or 6 of the other "jail cops" that come to stop him. After stopping 5 of those cops, 4 more come and hold guns to his head. He looks over to a fellow prisoner that he knows and winks at him meaning, the jailer is here, don't do anything stupid. The jailer enters the cell, slaps him, and says, "be on your best behaviour." In response the "gangster" apologizes, and says it was a mistake. Once the jailer locks him in and leaves, the gangster says aloud "that the slap will cost you jailer."
The jailer goes to his office where he receives a call from his daughter who lives in Bombay (played by [Raveena Tandon]). She has returned home. She tells her father that she will be doing a report for her paper on the jail where her father works, which was built in the British Times. She is reporting how the jail is doing to this day.
The next day she starts the tour at the kitchen of the jailĂ. She is of course beautiful and the "gangster" spots her. The same fellow prisoner tells him this is the Jailer's daughter. He grabs and tries to molest her to take revenge for the jailer slapping him, but she is rescued by one of the lead actors Sunil Shetty.
After protecting her from being raped, she tries to help him out and asks him to tell me his story and why he is here, at first he doesn't want to but then tells her anyways, his story is tragic and he says he had a good life but 4 people at a party raped his wife's sister and murdered her, and when they took the case to court the 4 young tennagers sons of 4 of the biggest gangsters in the city at the time, paid a huge amount to their lawyer who proved that his friend actually raped her and they had nothing to do with it, after the case the 4 guys go to Vishal's house in hopes of raping his wife but she commits suicide, after seeing this Vishal goes after the 4 guys who are at a Circus, at night and kills them all. He goes to the police station then and turns himself in right after the murder and is sentenced to lifetime in prison.
Roma (Raveena Tandon) prints in the paper that she works, saying Vishal is inncoent and wasn't given justice, and eventually makes a Life Sentenced man Free. She falls in love with the other leading actor of the movie Amar Saxena, played by Akshay Kumar. The owner of Roma's paper is the antagonist of the story he helps make Vishal free but his motivations are more sinister than just helping a wronged man.
He makes Vishal believe that he also wasn't given justice and his wife was murdered by the police who is also involved with the mafia, in reality the police commissioner is indeed involved with the mafia, but only takes money from them in return for releasing their small leaders, but doesn't help them in any other way and is a good guy.
Vishal is brainwashed by Mr. Jindal (owner of Roma's newspaper) played by Naseeruddin Shah, who is blind, and Vishal starts to work for him and becomes a serial killer. He kills all the mafia Dons and their relatives except for Mr. Jindal's brother who escapes. There are lots of other twists at the end of this thriller.
The film remains a benchmark for Hindi language thrillers and for its casting combination of Akshay-Suniel-Paresh is now very successful albeit in a slightly different genre (see Hera Pheri).
