Motherwell railway station serves Motherwell in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It lies on the West Coast Main Line, and is served also by Argyle Line trains of the Glasgow suburban railway network. It is the penultimate stop on the northbound WCML before Glasgow. There are four platforms of various length currently in operation at Motherwell.
[edit] Services
Local services departing to and from the station are provided by First ScotRail and the majority of northbound services serve Glasgow Central (either terminating at the High Level station or passing through the Low Level station en route to Dalmuir or Milngavie), whilst southbound Argyle Line services terminate at Lanark.
All intercity services operated by either Virgin Trains or GNER pass through Motherwell, bound for various destinations in England, although not all stop here. However, on timetables, Motherwell is defined either as a "set down only" (for Glasgow Central-bound services) or "pick-up only" station (for all southbound services) by both Virgin Trains and GNER. Therefore a passenger using a long-distance service to merely commute from Glasgow Central would be deemed not to have a valid ticket and be liable for a penalty fare - this is distinct from the policy operated by British Rail where no such restriction existed.
