MTU Aero Engines
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MTU Aero Engines, Germany's leading aircraft engine manufacturer, develops, manufactures and provides service support for aircraft engines, military and civil alike. MTU Aero Engines was formerly known as MTU München. Its customers are manufacturers and operators of engines and industrial gas turbines across the world. MTU is short for Motoren- und Turbinen-Union.
The company has roots dating back to the early years of motorized flight. The brand MTU itself was established in the late 1960s as a joint venture of Daimler-Benz and MAN, manufacturing aircraft engines in Munich and other engines and gas turbines in Friedrichshafen. In 1985, Daimler-Benz bought MAN's 50% share in the company and made MTU part of its aerospace subsidiary DASA. In 2000, when DASA was merged with other companies to form the European aeronautics and defense systems company EADS, MTU was split from DASA and stayed part of DaimlerChrysler. In 2003, MTU was sold to private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and, two years later, KKR in turn sold all its shares at Germany's stock exchanges.
