Nørre Alslev

Nørre Alslev is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Storstrøm County on the northern end of the island of Falster in south Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 181 km², and has a total population of 9,595 (2005). Its mayor is Niels Larsen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Nørre Alslev.

Neighboring municipalities with land connections to the municipality are Nykøbing Falster and Stubbekøbing to the south. Neighboring municipality Vordingborg to the north on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) is separated from the municipality by Storstrømmen ("The Great Stream"), the waterway which separates Falster from Zealand, and which defines the municipality's northern border. To the west of the municipality is Guldborg Strait (Guldborgsund), which separate Falster from the island of Lolland, and defines the municipality's western border. This is crossed by the Frederick IX Bridge, the Guldborgsund bridge and by tunnel.

Two bridges connect the municipality, and the rest of Falster, to Zealand. The 3,199 meter long Storstrøm Bridge connects the municipality from near the town of Orehoved to Masnedø, an island in Storstrommen and part of Vordingborg municipality, and the 201 meter long Masnedsund Bridge (Masnedsundbroen) continues from there to the town of Vordingborg. The Storstrøms Bridge supports two lanes of traffic, plus a single track of railroad. This vital railroad line leads to train ferry service in the town of Rødby Færge in south Lolland to Puttgarten, Germany over the Femern Belt. Both of these bridges were inaugurated in 1937.

Further to the east are the two Farø Bridges (the 1,726 meter long Farø High Bridge and the 1,596 meter long Farø Low Bridge), which opened in 1985, and connect the two municipalies from near the town of Sortsøgab over Farø island (part of Møn municipality), to Bakkebølle Strand in Vordingborg municipality.

By January 1, 2007 Nørre Alslev municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Nykøbing Falster, Nysted, Sakskøbing, Stubbekøbing, and Sydfalster municipalities to form the new Guldborgsund municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 907 km² and a total population of 63,533 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
