Præstø

Præstø is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Storstrøm County on the east coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) near its southwestern tip in south Denmark. The municipality includes the islands of Maderne, Storeholm, and Lilleholm which lie in Præstø Fjord. The municipality covers an area of 107 km², and has a total population of 7,608 (2005). Its mayor is Ole Møller Madsen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Præstø.

Neighboring municipalities are Fladså to the north, Vordingborg to the west, and Langebæk to the south. To the east, and also helping to define part of its northern border is Fakse Bay (Fakse Bugt). Præstø Fjord flows out of Fakse Bay, and also lies to the north of the municipality. On the other side of Fakse Bay to the north are neighboring municipalities Rønnede and Fakse.

The islands of Maderne, Storeholm and Lilleholm are part of the Præstø Fjord Wildlife Reserver (Præstø Fjord Vildtreservat).

By January 1, 2007 Præstø municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Langebæk, Møn, and Vordingborg municipalities to form an enlarged Vordingborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 615 km² and a total population of 46,307 (2005). The municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
