New Carrollton is a joint Washington Metro and Amtrak station in Prince George's County, Maryland at the eastern end of the Orange Line. The Amtrak waiting room is located beneath the Metro station platform. The Amtrak station serves mostly the Regional line with the occasional Vermonter train making a stop here.
The Pennsylvania Railroad planned the station in 1965, and the Penn Central Transportation Company opened the station on January 16, 1969 for Metroliner service. Originally named Capital Beltway, it was renamed to New Carrollton. Washington Metro Service began on November 20, 1978.
The station is in New Carrollton, Maryland with entrances at Harkins Road and Ellin Road, and Garden City Drive near US Route 50, and Exit 19 on Interstate 495.
This station is planned to be one of the Metro stations on the Purple Line system, formerly known as the Bi-County Transitway.
