New Cross station is a London Underground and mainline station in New Cross, about 600 m from New Cross Gate station. It is a southern terminus of the East London Line, the next station being Surrey Quays. It is in Travelcard Zone 2. The platforms are lettered A to D, to distinguish them from New Cross Gate platforms.
Main-line services are operated by Southeastern from Cannon Street or Charing Cross to north and mid Kent. The next stations are London Bridge to the north and St Johns to the south.
England's railway boom of the 1830s led to two competing companies driving lines through the area. The first, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) established a station on the New Cross Road close to Hatcham in 1839. The second company, the South Eastern Railway (SER), established a station near Amersham Road in the heart of New Cross in 1849. Both companies called their stations "New Cross".
The confusing state of affairs was allowed to continue until the two companies were absorbed into the Southern Railway on the post-war grouping in 1923. To avoid confusion the Southern changed the name of the Brighton station, the one furthest from New Cross, to New Cross Gate, leaving the South Eastern station as New Cross.
Although no recorded accidents have occurred at New Cross, the Spa Road Junction rail crash occurred a short distance outside the station.
[edit] London Overground
The East London Line will close on 22 December 2007 and not reopen until June 2010. It will become part of the new London Overground system. The service was also closed between 1995 and 1998 due to repair work on the East London Line's Thames Tunnel.
