[edit] In-school opportunities
The approximately 600 students of New Paltz Middle School have many opportunities to succeed in the school academically. After-school help is usually available, and there are many subjects that are easy to succeed in, boosting up the overall grade point average. Advanced placement or “accelerated” classes allow students in the 8th grade to complete 10th grade biology. Math is also an available accelerated course, which allows the students to breeze through Math 7 and Math 8 material in 7th grade, and then take the high school math course at the 8th grade level. These courses give the participating students high school credits. Foreign language is also a part of the school’s curriculum, with a new system that started in 2006 allowing 6th graders to start learning either French or Spanish, contrary to the usual system of starting these languages in 7th grade. This gives a jumpstart to the learning and eventually leads to the students taking the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam. The popular choice for students is Spanish.
