Greetings and salutations, my name is Rick (Richard) Cordeiro and I am a native Hamiltonian (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) and Proud of my City. Both parents are originally from Portugal; father from Sao Miguel, Azores, my mother from Funchal, Madeira Island. I am also a Blood Donor (O rh negative) this means I am a universal blood donor; anyone can use my blood type. You can help out many people too by becoming a blood donor. It doesn't cost you anything accept a few minutes of your time.

I decided to make contributions to Hamilton, Ontario wikipedia articles because I wasn't satisfied with the amount of information we had here prior to joining wikipedia. That's when I decided to roll up my sleeves and do something about it. We still have a way to go but progress is being made. Right now my main focus is List of streets in Hamilton, Ontario and after that I will switch gears and my focus will then become a new project called: List of Waterfalls in Hamilton, Ontario.

1,655: Edmonton

Things I'd like to see done with Hamilton, Ontario:

A great way to get the word out to outsiders is setting up Webcams in designated areas of town that you want to promote like our 88 Waterfalls, Dundurn Castle/Park, Cootes Paradise, Niagara escarpment Rail trail, Bruce Trail, the Royal Botanical Gardens, etc, etc...We have the technology and everybody surfs the Net now so lets start setting up Web Cams in these areas.

Secondly, I would like to see a Giant Hammer built in the waterfront right beside the Skyway Bridge with the message: "Welcome to the Hammer!" Let's make it the biggest Hammer in the world (Guinness World Record). Since 60% of all the Steel in Canada is produced right here in Hamilton we should start bragging to the rest of the nation that we helped build the country of Canada.

Film industry using Hamilton more and more so just like with "Hollywood", add HUGE block letters of our City's name on the side of the Mountain. At night Neon lights light up the name Hamilton on the side of the mountain. (below St. Lawrence Park, above The Jolly Cut (mountain access road). Also, Hamilton should start using some of their industrial and warehouse buildings that currently sit empty in the city's North End neighbourhoods and transform them into Movie Studios. The #1 target for me would be the old Otis Elevator/ Studabaker building on Victoria Avenue North. Most large movie productions bi-pass Toronto for Vancouver simply because Vancouver has a Mega-Studio which Toronto & Ontario currently do not have. Plus, Film Production companies already get extra tax credits filming in Hamilton compared to Toronto. The time is ripe for a Mega-Movie Studio in Hamilton.

Bring back the Incline railways. we use to have two of them in town. James Street (1892-1932) and Wentworth Street (1895-1936). Quebec City and Niagara Falls have recently added new Incline Railways at $300,000 each. At that price we should have a half a dozen of these right across the City from James Street to Stoney Creek. Start with the two original locations first, eventually adding an Incline railway at Dundurn Street South, Sherman Avenue South, Gage Avenue South and another location in the Eastern end of town in Stoney Creek at Gray Road to encourage growth in the Mountain there in that part of the region.

Hess Village is great attraction. Should make it longer and extend all the way down to the north, connecting our downtown to the Waterfront.

Add LARGE statue of George Hamilton, James Durand and Nathaniel Hughson (City founders) riding on horses at main entrance of Dundurn Park. Statue of all three men points towards our downtown. (This idea came from Ryan McGreal of Raise the Hammer (Online magazine), as well I got the dollar figures for the Incline Railway from him over at Skyscraper page.com)

Build a brand new Stadium for the CFL Hamilton Tiger-Cats that we can also use for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Call it The British Empire Coliseum, (or simply, Empire Coliseum for short), a 50,000-seater and get a bulldozer to level the site of the current Hamilton City Hall and build the new Stadium there. The current City Hall is falling apart at an alarming rate anyways. The other thing to consider about this site is it would also be next door to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame Museum.

Time to build Hamilton's biggest tower (60-stories) a BIG multi-purpose Tower in the core. Office-hotel-commercial-retail. A while back The Hamilton Spectator had article by Paul Wilson talking about Landmark Place (formerly Century 21 building) as Hamilton's Empire State building and the builder Al Frisina mentioned right after he built it that no one will ever build a tower bigger in Hamilton because "the demand's not there and nobody's crazy enough to do it." Let's get crazy and build something much bigger with a revolving rooftop restaurant. Could also build a second tower right beside it and the 2nd-tower could also be the site of the new Hamilton City Hall, Hamilton Board of Education, Dofasco's relocated offices and a couple of the courier companies working out of the Airport like UPS could move their offices there as well. Possible locations for the new tower(s) include: (1) the site of the Bingo Hall across from Gore Park, that block on King Street East from Hughson Street North to John Street North; my first choice for location. Bring City Hall back to the core PLUS by placing it there on that block you also get rid of the Bingo Hall, Salvation Army Thrift Store and the "Peep Show", all three should be relocated to some other part of town and away from our City's Core. (2) Beasley Park, corner of Mary and Cannon Streets to encourage revitalization in that part of the City's core. This site for me is prime for Condo developments. (3) Southwest corner of King Street and Bay Street, where a parking lot currently stands. (4) Northwest corner of King Street and Bay Street where The Beers of the World Pub currently stands (let's get rid of this "eye sore" once and for all) (5) The site where the Lister Block Building currently stands on the corner of James Street and King William Street.

Also, Hamilton one time had street cars (1874-1952), 27.97 route miles of electric railway, which includes the 2 incline railways. One of the routes they had was called The Belt Line and a route I like is similar to that one. The route I would implement if we were to bring back street cars OR some form of Light Rail Transit would circle the city's core in this manner: Barton Street (Barton Village - NORTH Side), Locke Street (Locke Street Shopping District - WEST Side), Main Street (down the centre, Main converts to a two-way street - SOUTH Side) and Ottawa Street (The Textile District - EAST Side, which could also evolve into a Fashion District, if it hasn't started to already). From there, future expansion routes could branch off from this central route. Of course it would need a name like; The Bee Line, which is a name used already by our HSR (Hamilton Street Railway) city buses but would be better suited for this street rail route. Future routes could also include a James Street express route (JAMES Express) which starts off at the North End by our waterfront and works it's way South towards the base of the Niagara Escarpment (mountain), and another on top of the mountain, Upper James Street express route (UPPER JAMES Express) that would travel all the way south to the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. Now, if you also bring back the James Street incline railway this would be the bridge connecting these two express routes and one for example could get off the James Street streetcar and TRANSFER over to the James Street Incline and once on the mountain you could then also TRANSFER over to the Upper James Street express route. Now in time the mountain would also want their own Bee Line route just like the one I propose for the Lower City Hamilton. My version of the mountain Bee Line or Belt Line route would be bounded by Upper James Street (WEST mountain), Stone Church Road (SOUTH mountain), Upper Ottawa Street (EAST mountain) and Fennell Avenue (NORTH mountain). Now, the second incline we use to have in Hamilton was on Wentworth Street, however, this time around I feel a better second incline would be on Gage Avenue South this way people living on the East Mountain could get to the Lower City of Hamilton East alot faster, connecting Upper Gage Avenue to Gage Avenue South and Gage Park. The other primary location for an incline railway I believe would be on Dundurn Street South this way McMaster Innovation Park (Lower City) gets better connected to Mohawk College on the mountain. One more express route for the street car/(light rail transit) in the Lower City (MAIN Express) would be one that starts off at Main Street West at McMaster University and stretches out to the Eastern end of town to Fiesta Mall in Stoney Creek.

Recap of the LRT/street car routes:

  • Hamilton Belt Line/Bee Line (Lower City), which includes the following:
    • NORTH Side - Barton Street (Barton Village)
