Hi ~ I'm Cheryl. My nickname "nightngle" gives away how long I've been online, I guess, since the number of letters reflects former restrictions on username lengths. It also reflects my profession and my deep appreciation to Florence Nightengale for her contributions to healthcare. I'm relatively new here, and am finding browsing and making edits to be quite adictive. My intention is certainly to add value to what I do here, so hopefully, I won't become embroiled in any controversies. I like the sentiment in "Be Bold", but am more of a "Be Mild" person at this point. My current goal is to gather all the changes I want to make on a page and do them all at once instead of having 5 changes listed. (sheesh)
I'm a practicing Buddhist and a member of the Order of Interbeing, following the teachings of Thay Nhat Hanh. I hope to be able to flesh out and add to the pages relating to the OI. I've just created the article about Sister Chan Khong, so I'm patting myself on the back for my very first article. I'm also a hospice nurse and would like to work on the Palliative Care section here as well, but it seems to be written from a British point of view. It seems to me that the article needs a major reorganization and I'm not sure I'm up for that, especially since there have been some edit wars on the page - definately not in keeping with my "be mild" philosophy.
I enjoy collecting and trading Disney pins - mostly pins from the movie Sleeping Beauty. I've recently expanded the Disney pin trading page from a stub to an article (I was having writers block on some other projects, and this was a fun "no-brainer").
I am the proud owner of a Betta splendens named Claude Monet. I'm amazed at how responsive he is - I can understand now why people get hooked on them! As I'm learning more about these fish, I'm working on making his life as natural as possible. The tank is planted now to resemble a river, I feed him more sparingly, and allow him to "attack" his food, rather than being fed by me. He builds bubble nests now close to the long leaves that stick out of the water and then lights on the leaves under the nest to protect his imaginary fry. He's even been seen carrying around a pellet of food in his mouth - he looks rather goofy, but I suppose he's practising carrying eggs. I'm going to order some almond leaves to give his water a bit of tannin as well.
I've added myself to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography since I've found myself most interested in working on biographies - primarily of Buddhist teachers, but also other religious topics. We shall see - it's hard to find the time even though I want to work on them. When will I win the lottery so I can play instead of work?? ;-)
As a note now that I've been editing more here - I started working on Wikipedia mostly so I could learn for when the OI established an internal wiki. I also wanted to shepard the OI related articles. I've done a lot of work on TNHs page, but haven't expanded the others as much as I intended. I've found myself wandering more afield lately, and am considering if that's a good idea or not. I may try to get back on the origional focus I had intended for myself and ignore other pages - I'm not sure how embroiled I want to become. I'm a live as let live kind of gal, but that's doesn't mean I'm not opinionated or that I don't stand up for my opinions! Additionally, there's really just no way to keep up with the "professional" editors here. I'm stunned at how prolific some of these folks are. We shall see - my New Year's resolutions tend to be more generalities, perhaps I'll resolve to flesh out the OI related articles here and not fiddle with other things until that's done.
