North Potomac, Maryland

North Potomac is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. Major shopping area include Travilah Square. Travilah Square, long the area's only shopping center, is now facing tough competition from a new breed of new urbanism lifestyle centers, which contain a multitude of retailers, from the Giant Food to new boutique chains. Other examples of new urbanism near North Potomac in include the Kentlands in Gaithersburg, MD and Clarksburg Town Center in Clarksburg, MD. Originally a wide expanse of farmland, the area has added several housing developments, often named after the farms they replaced.

Local schools include Stone Mill Elementary, Travilah Elementary, and Dufief Elementary. Stone Mill feeds into Cabin John Middle. Travilah and Dufief feed into Robert Frost Middle. Also, there is Jones Lane Elementary which feeds into Kingsview Middle School in Germantown, MD. Cabin John and Robert Frost middle schools feed into Thomas S. Wootton High School in nearby Rockville, Maryland, while Jones Lane feeds into Quince Orchard High School.

As an unincorporated area, North Potomac's boundaries are not officially defined. North Potomac is, however, recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census-designated Place, and by the United States Geological Survey as a populated place located at 39°5′50″N, 77°14′3″W (39.097206, -77.234213)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 17.0 km² (6.6 mi²), all land. The main artery for the area is Darnestown road, which connects North Potomac with the other affluent communities nearby (Potomac & Bethesda).

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 23,044 people, 6,924 households, and 6,245 families residing in the area. The population density was 1,360.4/km² (3,522.1/mi²). There were 7,002 housing units at an average density of 413.4/km² (1,070.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the area was 64.64% White, 4.21% African American, 0.13% Native American, 27.59% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.94% of the population.

There were 6,924 households out of which 60.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 79.9% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 9.8% were non-families. 7.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.33 and the average family size was 3.51.

In the area, the population was spread out with 34.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 3.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the area was $109,173, and the median income for a family was $112,277. Males had a median income of $81,216 versus $49,634 for females. The per capita income for the area was $37,573. About 1.5% of families and 2.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.6% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over.
