[edit] History
The Northern Counties East Football League is an English association football league that was founded in 1982 by the merger of the former Yorkshire League and Midland League.
Its two divisions are on the ninth and tenth levels of the football pyramid. There is also a reserve league, which is not part of the football league system.
There were initially three leagues; the Premier Division, Division One and Division Two (which merged with Division One after the 1990/91 season). Briefly during the 1985/86 season Division Three was added, however it discontinued after just one season. The league continues today with just two leagues, the Premier Division and Division One, where 37 teams in total compete.
The league's Premier Division is a feeder to the NPL First Division, with the championship winning team being promoted. Should they not meet required ground standards to compete in the NPL, however, the Runners-Up may be granted promotion instead. The bottom two clubs of the league's Premier Division and the top two clubs of Division One take eachothers place at the end of every season ready to compete in their respective new leagues the following season. Relegation from Division One results in the team finishing at the bottom going into either the WYA Premier Division, the WRC Premier Division or the CML Supreme Division, and the team taking their place being the champions of that league, dependent of the required ground standards. Teams from the feeder leagues can also be elected to the league, due to other clubs folding and/or league expansion.
