The Isthmian League Division One North is a football division of the Isthmian League in England. It runs in parallel to the Isthmian League Division One South and its champions are promoted to the Isthmian League Premier Division.
[edit] History
A previous First Division North (note the slightly different name) existed for two seasons from 2002-03 till 2003-04.
The division was formed from a merger of the Isthmian League First Division and the Isthmian League Second Division at the end of the 2001-02 season, the idea being to reduce travel distance for teams in the Isthmian league.
However, the creation of the Conference South reduced the number of teams in the Isthmian League, meaning only one First Division was necessary. The F.A., however, decided that there should be 6, rather than 4, 'step four' divisions of the National League System, again to reduce travel costs. As a result, the First Division North was reformed for the 2006-07 season (as Division One North), with 11 teams transferring to the Isthmian League from the old Southern League Division One East, 8 teams from the various leagues below it, 2 relegated from the Isthmian League Premier Division, plus Canvey Island, who had asked to be re-allocated to Step 4 from the Football Conference (Step 1). The new division covers Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.
