Nottinghamshire Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing the shire county of Nottinghamshire and the unitary authority of Nottingham in the East Midlands of England. The area has a population of just over 1 million.
The force was established in its present form in 1968 by a merger of the Nottinghamshire Constabulary and Nottingham City Police. [1] It was known as the Nottinghamshire Combined Constabulary until it was reconstituted on April 1, 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972.
The force headquarters are found at Arnold. As of 31st March 2005 the force had an establishment of 2,499 police officers, 1,350 police staff, 324 special constables and 102 Community Support Officers. The Chief Constable is Steven Green, who has been in post since 2000.
Nottinghamshire Police Authority has 9 councillors (chosen by a joint board selected by Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council), 3 justices of the peace, and 5 independent members.
Proposals made by the Home Secretary on March 20, 2006 would see the force merge with the other four East Midlands forces to form a strategic police force for the entire region. [2]
In June 2006, the force was declared effective and efficient by Her Majesty's Inspectorate after five years of intense scrutiny. [3]. The report was welcomed by Chief Constable Steve Green.
In July 2006 the proposed merger was cancelled [4][5]
In a recent performance assessment carried out by the government, Nottinghamshire Police was ranked the 3rd worst police force in the country.

The force is split into four divisions;
- A Division - Mansfield & Ashfield
- B Division - Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood
- C Division - Nottingham City
- D Division - South Nottinghamshire (covers the local government boroughs of Broxtowe, Gedling, and Rushcliffe).
