Oakland Technical High School

Oakland Technical High School, in Oakland, California U.S.A., known locally as Oakland Tech, is a public high school located on 4351 Broadway in North Oakland. It is one of six comprehensive public high school campuses in Oakland and is operated by the Oakland Unified School District. Founded in 1917, it is the alma mater of Tony Martin, Clint Eastwood, Rickey Henderson, Abbas Milani, Huey P. Newton, the Pointer Sisters, Gabriel Carroll, Marshawn Lynch, Leon Powe, Quentin Thomas, Curt Flood, Ron Dellums, Johann Curry, John Brodie, University of California basketball players Devanei Hampton and Alexis Gray-Lawson and rapper, Mistah F.A.B.

[edit] Academies

Students at Oakland Technical High School have the option enrolling in one of the school's academies, which operate as small subsets of the school. Students take one or two classes within their academies, and the rest of the day in normal classes. As of 2006, Oakland Tech has Engineering, Health, and Computer & Technology academies. Students also have the opportunity to enroll in the Paideia program but only if your teacher reccomends you for it. Paideia is an advanced History and English program directed by Maryann Wolfe and one Marietta Joe. Together they both teach grades 10-12. In your Sophmore year, you will have the option to take English 2 Paideia and World Cultures. The teacher of that is Jonas Zuckerman and Mareitta Joe, and then in 11th grade, students, based on there grades, will have the option to enroll into HP English/AP US History or HP English/HP US History. The teacher of that is Elisabeth Haugen and Maryann Wolfe. In 12th grade, students who are recomended that far are to take AP Government, AP Literature, and HP Comparative Government, were they anylise works of art and compare that to the government.

The school building is a local landmark. It strongly resembles the main science building at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During the 1970s when many California schools were being demolished and rebuilt for earthquake safety, the Tech main building was declared too historic to tear down. Instead, it was gutted and rebuilt on the inside to preserve the historic outside. In the past couple years the outside of Tech has been repainted.

According to 1999's statistics, Oakland Tech has 1,676 students enrolled. The school's aprox. racial make up is 62.6% African American or Black, 20.2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 11.2% Hispanic, and 5.6% White.
