[edit] Battle Kukku Army

Great Battle Kukku 15th, leader of the Battle Kukku Army.
Great Battle Kukku 15th, leader of the Battle Kukku Army.

The Battle Kukku Army are an army of birds that invade Cocoa Island (Tails Island in the English language versions) in Tails Adventure. They invade the island to snag the Chaos Emeralds which are hidden on the island. Tails battles the army and after he defeats their leader, the birds surrender. Another name for the Battle Kukku Army is the Battle Bird Armada[citation needed], and they consist of uniformed birds, somewhat intelligent robot drones and advanced machinery. The Battle Kukku Army lives on a huge flying fortress that posed as an island throughout most of Tails Adventure.

Notable members of the Battle Kukku Army include:

  • Grand Battle Kukku 15th, the dictator-like leader of the army. He is larger than most Kukkus, and is the final boss of the game battled in his flying fortress. He fights by throwing bombs all around him and throwing Tails himself if the fox gets too close.
  • Battle Kukku 16th, aka Speedy, the son of Grand Battle Kukku 15th. Speedy is a quick green Kukku who, despite his natural and fast aerial skills, sometimes wears armor equipped with an energy gun and a jet engine that lets him take even faster flight. He appears as a boss twice throughout the game, first on Pori Pori Mountain and then in the flying fortress just before the player faces his father.
  • Dr. Fukurokov, the army's main scientist. He is the first boss of the flying fortress, but does not actually fight, as he instead lets his defensive machinery take care of Tails. His tendency to overlook little details is his greatest weakness.

[edit] Biolizard

The Biolizard, as seen in Sonic X.
The Biolizard, as seen in Sonic X.

Biolizard, the Prototype of Ultimate Life, is a creature which appears in Sonic Adventure 2 as the final boss, and in episode 38 of Sonic X under the same role. It is also seen briefly in a flashback in Shadow the Hedgehog. The Biolizard appears as a giant lizard with a life support system on its back, and according to Sonic X, the Biolizard is 85 meters long, 30 meters wide, 19.5 meters tall, and weighs 87.5 tons.[1]

The Biolizard was an early version of "Project Shadow", a government project run by Professor Gerald Robotnik that was intended to create an "Ultimate Lifeform" as a first step towards humanity discovering the secret of immortality. Due to the experiments, it later needed a life support system. While the Biolizard was successful in the way that it was could regenerate and restore itself, and could self-reproduce, it was also unruly and dangerous.[2] It was closed down when Gerald, with the aid of the alien Black Doom, produced a more advanced being: Shadow the Hedgehog. When GUN came to Space Colony ARK in order to put a stop to Gerald Robotniks plans, they found the Biolizard and shut it down. It didn't go without a fight, however, and it destroyed almost the entire group of GUN soldiers.

The Biolizard remained in suspended animation aboard the ARK until Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends came there. After Doctor Eggman successfully achieved the seventh Chaos Emerald and put it into the Eclipse Cannon, a video of Gerald Robotnik was shown on all televisions and an audio version on the radio warning people of the Biolizard and how when the seven Chaos Emeralds came to the ARK, the ARK would plunge into the Earth's atmosphere. As the seven Chaos Emeralds were in place the ARK began to fall. Sonic and Eggman joined forces and tried to pull the ARK into orbit again by using Knuckles' Master Emerald to deactivate the Chaos Emeralds.

However, when Sonic and Knuckles entered the cannon's core, the Biolizard was awoken, determined to keep the ARK on its path to Earth. Later, Amy Rose convinced Shadow to help save the Earth, and Shadow fought and won against the giant reptile. The Biolizard then used Chaos Control to teleport outside and fuse with the space station itself, becoming the Finalhazard, the final boss of the game. It was destroyed by the combined power of Sonic and Shadow in super form, who then used Chaos Control to place the ARK back into orbit.

[edit] Black Arms

Black Warrior, a generic minion
Black Warrior, a generic minion

Black Arms are an alien race led by Black Doom. They appear in the game Shadow the Hedgehog, where they invaded Earth in search of the seven Chaos Emeralds, and are battled by the game's main character Shadow the Hedgehog, along with other characters.

The Black Arms are out to collect the Chaos Emeralds so that they can use Chaos Control to teleport their Black Comet to the Earth's surface, where it digs into the planet and releases a toxic gas that paralyzes all life without Black Arms DNA. The game's various endings lets the player either help them, or oppose them, but no matter what the player chooses to do, the game has a "final ending", where Black Doom obtains the Chaos Emeralds and warps the Black Comet to the planet's surface. Shadow opposes the Black Arms, becoming Super Shadow and defeating Devil Doom, a powerful mutated form of Black Doom. He then proceeds to use Chaos Control to send the Black Comet into space again, where he blasts it with the Eclipse Cannon on the Space Colony ARK, destroying it along with the brunt of the Black Arms residing inside it.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, the Black Arms also appear locked in war with another alien race known as the Xorda. For the time being, this war keeps both of them away from Sonic's home planet of Mobius.

Members of the alien arms that invade Earth under Black Doom's command. They will attack Shadow, even if Shadow attempts to complete one of Black Doom's missions. They come in several shapes, such as the normal "Black Warrior" troopers, giant "Black Oaks", large worms known as "Black Annelids" and flying bat-like creatures known as "Black Hawks", which Shadow can ride during the game.

[edit] Black Doom

Black Doom
Black Doom

Black Doom is the main antagonist from the game Shadow the Hedgehog. Black Doom appears as the leader of the alien Black Arms. Depending on which path the player choose (Hero or Dark), Black Doom will either be an ally or a foe of Shadow the Hedgehog. He has various telekinetic powers, the ability to use Chaos Control, and a third eye, simply known as "Doom's Eye", that is a separate being from himself, and can speak and project a hologram of Black Doom.

Fifty years prior to the game, Black Doom formed a sort of alliance with Gerald Robotnik. He and Gerald created the Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow, in order to expand Gerald's research and help Black Doom retrieve the Chaos Emeralds, so he could teleport the Black Comet to Earth. Shadow was created from Black Doom's blood, and his DNA. However, Gerald realized the threat his new alliance presented to Earth and secretly planned to use Shadow, and the newly built Eclipse Cannon to destroy the Black Comet when it made it's next bicentennial visit. However, soon after the events detailed in Sonic Adventure 2 occurred and Gerald's initial plan was forgotten as he sunk into grief and madness.

Black Doom appeared at the beginning of the game as a hologram projected by Doom's Eye to inform Shadow that "the day of reckoning" has arrived. Black Doom uses Shadow throughout the game in order to retrieve the seven Chaos Emeralds for him. He continuously pressures Shadow to denounce the home he has made on Earth, and swear allegiance to the Black Arms and their goals. He often tries to accomplish this by trying to manipulate Shadow into believing that no good can come from the continued existence of humanity, offering to tell him about his past, and even goes so far as to put Shadow into a recreation of what happened to him on the Space Colony ARK to better justify the evil humans are capable of.

When Shadow gains all of the Chaos Emeralds, Black Doom steals them, and reveals that he needed them to amplify his Chaos Control. The Black Comet's own velocity was not fast enough to penetrate Earth's atmosphere, and so he needed the Emeralds to perform a mass Chaos Control so that he could root the comet to Earth and use it to unleash a paralyzing nerve gas on the planet's population to make them food for his Black Arms spawn. Shadow's inherited genetics from Doom make him the only other creature on the planet capable of resisting the effects of the gas. Retreating to his inner sanctum at the very center of the comet, Black Doom defends himself from his advancing offspring with a perimeter of his most elite Black Arms soldiers.

When Shadow reaches him, Black Doom finally reveals the truth of Shadow's parentage, but is soon after interrupted by a fifty year old transmission of Gerald from the Space Colony ARK, accidentally activated by the Chaotix Detective Agency. The transmission reveals to the world Gerald's secret plan to destroy the Black Comet and gives Shadow the resolve to defeat the tyrant. Before he can attack, Black Doom teleports outside and transforms into his most powerful form - Devil Doom. Shadow uses the left behind Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Shadow and give chase. The two engage in a final battle in the sky over the rooted Black Comet, during which Devil Doom makes continued pleas for Shadow to join him. Shadow is ultimately able to defeat Devil Doom, sending him tumbling down into the city below.

[edit] Eggman Nega

Eggman Nega in Sonic Rush.
Eggman Nega in Sonic Rush.

Eggman Nega is one of the main villains in Sonic Rush. He is introduced as Doctor Eggman's counterpart from another dimension , and the primary nemesis of Blaze the Cat, another character from that dimension. He is more cruel and calculating than the Eggman from Sonic's world, and has sent Blaze's world into ruin, which is why he sets out for the Sol Emeralds. He is eerily polite for such a cold and calculating person. His downside, however, is that he can sometimes lose track of important details while making unnecessary speeches. His design appears reminiscent to the older Eggman from the Genesis Sonic games, albeit with the colors reversed.

While Eggman himself is first thought to be the primary antagonist in Sonic Rivals, the player soon finds out that Eggman Nega has captured Eggman and is disguising himself as him. Sonic Rivals also reveals that Eggman Nega is from 200 years in the future and that he is Eggman's descendent. Using a special camera, he turns several objects and characters into cards, with the objective of turning the world into a card that he will be able to control. During the somewhat ambiguous ending of the game, Nega is captured inside a card of his own by Silver, yet it was never revealed how he returned to the past.

[edit] EggRobo

EggRobo is an egg-shaped humanoid robot resembling Dr. Eggman. They first appeared as enemies in the game Sonic & Knuckles. In Sonic's storyline in that game, many copies appeared as standard Badnik enemies in the Sky Sanctuary Zone, after being seen launched from the Death Egg.

They are rather more prominent in Knuckles's storyline, however, as one EggRobo in particular attacks Knuckles in the beginning of the game, and then replaces Eggman in cutscenes and as the end-of-zone boss in every level up until the Hidden Palace Zone, with the exception of Flying Battery Zone, which is Eggman due to EggRobo not having sprites to mirror Eggman's angle at the time. This EggRobo appears to have greater intelligence than the other ones, and can pilot machines like Eggman. There is also no animal inside this one. This EggRobo is destroyed by Mecha Sonic in the Sky Sanctuary Zone (the final level in Knuckles' storyline). The EggRobo restrains Knuckles, allowing Mecha Sonic to charge at him, but Knuckles breaks free and Mecha Sonic destroys the EggRobo instead. It is unknown if Mecha Sonic destroyed it accidentally or if it were its intention all along.

EggRobo has appeared as an unlockable playable character in Sonic R and Sonic Adventure 2.

[edit] Erazor Djinn

Erazor Djinn
Erazor Djinn

Erazor Djinn is a genie who serves as the primary antagonist in Sonic and the Secret Rings. In the game, he attempts to absorb the pages of the book 1001 Nights so he can control the entire world of Arabian Nights, as well as make his way into Sonic's world. His name is a pun on the words "Eraser" and "Razor" because he is "erasing" the pages of the book and he uses a razor-like weapon. He is voiced by Masashi Ebara in Japanese and Peter Cormican in English.

When he first encounters Sonic and Shahra in the beginning of the game, he shoots a blast out of his finger towards Shahra, but Sonic takes the hit, getting shot in the chest. Erazor then warns Sonic that he has a time limit of when he will be "extinguished" like the flame, and that if he wanted the curse lifted from him, he must obtain the seven World Rings, the rings that contain the basic essences that power Arabian Nights, and bring them to Erazor. Later in the story, upon collecting the Purple World Ring at Night Palace, Sonic asks how Shahra came to know so much about Erazor. Shahra reveals that Erazor is the Genie of the Lamp from the tale of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. Originally, he was punished for his misdeeds, and was to remain in his lamp until he had granted the wishes of one thousand people. When he had fulfilled his sentence and was finally freed, he had a renewed hatred of humanity, and began to take over the Arabian Nights, twisting the words that supported the stories into spirits that followed his command.

Sonic eventually fights Erazor at his floating Night Palace and defeats him. However, he disappears behind the door that need the World Rings to open it. Once Sonic and Shahra open it and go inside, they meet Erazor again. Erazor tries to convince Shahra to give him the World Rings. Shahra hesitates, but is about to do so because she wanted to go back to him (Shahra was hinted to be friends with Erazor or in love with him at one point). As master of the ring, Sonic orders Shahra to do what she believes is right, which stuns her in confusion. In the meantime, Erazor needs a certain sacrifice to utilize the full power of the World Rings - he needs to kill Sonic, who had collected the World Rings. As he made his strike, Shahra gets in the way to save Sonic. She slowly dies, begging for Sonic's forgiveness. With the power of the World Rings, Erazor transforms into Alf Layla-wa Layla (which translates to 1,000 and 1 Nights in Arabic), though he is incomplete because Sonic is still alive. Three of the World Rings (symbolizing Sadness, Rage, and Hatred) go into Sonic, transforming him into Darkspine Sonic. Darkspine Sonic then battles the transformed Erazor Djinn as the distant voice of Shahra guides him.

After the battle, Erazor reverts back to his normal form, as well as Sonic. Erazor boasts about being immortal, and that he'll always come back after defeat. However, Sonic uses the magic lamp given by Shahra, which was inactive at the time, and uses three wishes: to bring Shahra back to life, to restore the stories of the Arabian Nights, and to seal the evil being away in the lamp for the rest of time. Helpless against the mystic powers of the lamp, the defeated genie was forced to grant them all, and doomed himself to his eternal prison.

[edit] Fang the Sniper

For information on the version of Fang seen in the Archie comics, see Nack the Weasel.
Fang
Fang

Fang the Sniper (ファング・ザ・スナイパー Fangu za Sunaipā?), also known as Nack the Weasel, is a purple anthropomorphic half-wolf, half-weasel hybrid that first appeared in the Game Gear video game Sonic Triple Trouble as a treasure hunter in search of the Chaos Emeralds. Fang is from another dimension, the mysterious Special Zone. Manuals mention that he is obsessed with valuables, jewels and money, and has interests in beautiful women. He wears a large, brown stetson, brown and white boots, and brown gloves with metal plates on them. He is often seen with his air-bike, the Marvelous Queen.

The character was originally conceived as Fang the Sniper, the name by which he was known in the Japanese Sonic games but this was briefly changed in the European and American releases to "Nack the Weasel". This name was used in his debut game, Sonic Triple Trouble, and the comic books he also appears in, but all games released after Sonic Triple Trouble have called him "Fang", regardless of language. It is interesting to note that promotional materials called him Jet the Sniper, but it is unknown if this is a name during development or an early localization attempt.

Fang the Sniper has appeared in Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift 2, Tails Adventures, and Sonic the Fighters. In addition, he was set to appear in Sonic X-treme, but did not due to its cancellation (though the game may possibly be revived with the announcement of Project S). He was last mentioned in a DVD-ROM flash comic that came with Sonic and the Secret Rings.

[edit] Iblis

Iblis in his second form, the first being an amorphous ball of fire.
Iblis in its third form.
Iblis in its third form.

Iblis was an immortal monster of mass destruction and was Silver the Hedgehog's main enemy in Sonic the Hedgehog. It was a creature that was born from "The Flames of Disaster", and also takes the name "Disaster" from this. Iblis apppears to be mindless and only seems to be interested in causing destruction. Its primary form has four arms and was a lava-like version of Perfect Chaos in appearance. Originally sealed inside Princess Elise by her father over 10 years before the game, Iblis was inadvertently released by the "Iblis Trigger" a few years later. As a result, Iblis continued to destroy the world up until, and including, Silver's time period in the future. In Silver's story, Silver the Hedgehog and Blaze the Cat continuously battle Iblis, but it ended up proving too powerful for either of them to defeat. It had the ability to continually resurrect itself. Thus, Mephiles advises Silver and Blaze to depart to the time period right before Iblis' final transformation to stop Sonic the Hedgehog, referred to as the "Iblis Trigger" from destroying the world. In order to defeat Iblis, Blaze was forced to seal it within her, seemingly destroying both of them. However, as the intention was to trap Iblis in another dimension. In addition to the form described earlier, Iblis' other forms are one like a giant snake with a ripped up face, the first one with two arms but has legs, and his original form, a ball of flame. Blaze the Cat also mentions that Iblis was close to his final form, during the final battle of Silver the Hedgehog's storyline.

[edit] Mephiles the Dark

Mephiles the Dark

Mephiles, in his Shadow-like form, holding a Chaos Emerald.

Mephiles the Dark (メフィレス・ザ・ダーク Mefiresu za Dāku?) is the primary antagonist from the 2006 video game Sonic the Hedgehog. Mephiles has three forms; the first and original was a dark, formless ooze or gas. He laters gains his second form briefly after absorbing Shadow's silhouette, giving him an appearance almost identical to Shadow himself, but with a grayish-blue color replacing everything that was red on Shadow, silver glove rings replacing Shadows original gold glove rings and green, feral-looking eyes, but no mouth. His third and favorite form was a crystalline, anthropomorphic hedgehog form resembling the appearance of other hedgehogs in the Sonic series, such as Sonic himself. This form has blue quill tips and red eyes with green irises, a pale muzzle, and no mouth or nose.

Mephiles was created during the "Solaris Experiment" related to Elise's father. He was actually an extension of Iblis himself; he is the shadow of Iblis, the conscious counterpart to the flames' raw power. He was sealed in the "Scepter of Darkness" by Shadow the Hedgehog, who had traveled through time to ten years before the events of the game. In the present, Dr. Eggman accidentally releases him while trying to steal the scepter from Rouge the Bat. When he is released, Mephiles uses Shadow's shadow to reawaken and Shadow sees Mephiles is a near exact physical duplicate of himself, but with slightly different colors. He seeks to get the Chaos Emeralds and bring pain and despair to Princess Elise, with the goals of making her cry, therefore releasing Iblis, the "Flames of Disaster", and then fuse with him, becoming Solaris.

To accomplish this, he tells Silver the Hedgehog and Blaze the Cat that Sonic the Hedgehog was the cause of Iblis being released, which led to the destruction of their world. Sonic was, thus, referred to as the "Iblis Trigger". The two then promptly traveled back in time to stop Sonic from inadvertently destroying the world in the future. It was really Mephiles' plan to make Elise cry, as she loves Sonic; with two such powerful fighters fooled into thinking that Sonic was evil, they would attack him and undoubtedly cause him enough harm to make Elise cry, release Iblis, and bring about the event.

Along the way, as all three storylines progress, the three main characters discover how Mephiles was somehow involved in the secret "Flames of Disaster", wielded by Princess Elise. Mephiles has a very pivotal role in all of the storylines, throughout the course of the game (even though he ends up battling Shadow in Shadow's story). In the Last Story, Mephiles uses a Chaos Emerald to warp to Sonic and Elise's location, then Mephiles instantly impales Sonic with a spear of energy (possibly a Chaos Spear), thus killing him. Elise cries over his death and, as a result, releases Iblis, allowing Mephiles to fuse with him and transform into Solaris. Fortunately, the creature was defeated, and Mephiles was erased from history.

[edit] Metal Knuckles

Metal Knuckles, as seen in promotional art for Sonic R.
Metal Knuckles, as seen in promotional art for Sonic R.

Just as Metal Sonic is the robot counterpart to Sonic, Metal Knuckles is the doppelgänger of Knuckles the Echidna. He has Knuckles' strength, with even greater speed. In terms of videogames, Metal Knuckles only appeared in Sonic R, where he was a faster version of Knuckles with a better gliding ability but with worse traction. Metal Knuckles was the character that went through the most shortcuts when played by the computer, so following this character was the easiest way to find the quickest route to the finish line.

A robotic Knuckles also appears as a boss in Sonic Advance, though whether it is Metal Knuckles or not is unclear (Some call him Mecha Knuckles). This robot looks like a pink Knuckles with yellow gloves at first, and has virtually every move Knuckles has. After being struck three times his "armor" will fall off, revealing a metallic echidna with glowing red eyes underneath. In this "form", the robot is faster and can fire homing missiles from its mouth. After being attacked another three times, the robot explodes.

[edit] Solaris

Solaris' first form.

Solaris' second form.

Solaris was a god of time and the super-dimensional sun god of Soleanna seen in Sonic the Hedgehog. Solaris initially existed as a flame which was worshiped by the citizens of Soleanna. The Duke of Soleanna led experiments into Solaris, in the hopes of using its time control powers to allow humanity to correct its past sins. However, during one such experiment Solaris became unstable and split into two forms - Iblis, the raw power, and Mephiles, the conscious mind. Mephiles was sealed into an artifact known as the "Scepter of Darkness" whilst the Duke was forced to seal Iblis inside of his young daughter, Princess Elise The Third. Before dying from wounds caused by the accident, he told his daughter to grow up to be a strong queen who would never cry as doing so would destroy the seal on Iblis.

After killing Sonic, Mephiles was quick to rejoin with his counterpart after its release from Princess Elise, once again forming their complete form of Solaris. Still enraged at being tampered with during the Solaris Project, Solaris plunged the world into darkness, preparing to devour time itself. Before he could achieve this, he was defeated by a combined assault from Super Sonic, Super Shadow and Super Silver. His defeat spirited Elise and Sonic back to before the fateful experiment. After some contemplation, Elise chose to blow out the tiny flame that was Solaris and thus change history by erasing him from existence.

[edit] Tails Doll

The Tails Doll.
The Tails Doll.

The Tails Doll (also mistakenly called "Puppet Tails"[citation needed]) is a doll version of Miles "Tails" Prower built by Dr. Eggman. It is a secret character in the racing game Sonic R, unlocked by finding the 5 tokens in the "Radical City" track, finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the race, and the defeating Tails Doll in a race. Tails Doll has poor handling, average acceleration and average top speed. Its jumping abilities are quirky, too, since it cannot jump very high, but has a strange floating ability as its "air action". It is also the only character who can float over the water without slowing down after a period of time. Tails Doll is also one of the few characters who did not appear in the character poll by Sonic Channel, which featured multiple exceedingly obscure characters, such as Ray, Bean, and Bark. The tails Doll's most recent non-remake appearance was in Sonic Adventure where Robotnik used dolls of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails for a shooting gallery to train his E-series robots. Wether or not the Tails Doll is one of these is unknown, however the resembalance is very noticible.[3]

[edit] Void

Void
Void

Void is the imp-like villain from Sonic Shuffle. At the start of the game, Void shatters the mysterious Precioustone, which controls his world, Maginary World. Sonic and friends then set out on a quest to defeat him and repair the stone. Throughout the game, Void shows signs of depression and loneliness which touches the hearts of Sonic and his friends who, in turn, want to help him amidst the evilness within him. At the end of the game, it turns out that Void is needed for the balance in Maginary World, as he is the nothingness that gives people the ability to dream. As such, Sonic and his friends do not defeat him, and leave Maginary World knowing that Lumina and Void cancel each other out.

[edit] Wendy Witchcart

Wendy Witchcart is an old human witch who rides around in a fancy rail cart on an island she claims as her own, and is the main villain of Tails' Skypatrol. She says she is able to turn any dissenters into crystal. In the game, the goal of Tails is to free the island and its inhabitants from her tyranny. Aside from an army of robots, Wendy's main lackeys are:

  • Fockewulf, a blue male wolf who rides a flying bike. He appears to be named after Focke-Wulf, a German company known for manufacturing military aircraft for the Luftwaffe during the second World War. Fockewulf is the first boss of the game, fighting Tails in Rail Canyon, the second level (the first level has no boss). He fights by throwing grenades at Tails, which explode into four pieces on impact.
  • Bearenger, a black male bear who rides a small flying rocket with a shark face similar to the Flying Tigers fighter planes from World War II. He is the boss of Ruin Wood, the third level. Bearenger fights by firing energy projectiles in sets of three from his rocket.
  • Carrotia, an orange female rabbit who flies in a flying carrot. She wears a bow and is the boss Metal Island, the fourth level, where she fights by firing small homing carrot-shaped missiles and throwing kisses.

[edit] Trivia

  • Storyline ideas for issues following issue #134 of the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie Comics included introducing the Battle Kukku Army (renamed the Battlebird Armada), King Boom Boo, and Void into the storyline.[4]
  • Mephiles the Dark is the first and only character in any continuity to canonically kill Sonic.
  • Black Doom, as Devil Doom, is the first Villain Super Shadow battles and defeats on his own.
