Palom (パロム Paromu?) and Porom (ポロム Poromu?) are fictional characters in the Square Co., Ltd. RPG Final Fantasy IV. They are fraternal twins and apprentice mages from Mysidia; Palom a Black Mage and Porom a White Mage. Palom is the more brash of the two in both words and action. He is very rowdy and mischievous, often prompting his sister to settle him down in one way or another. Porom is very calm, mature, and polite for her age and is constantly minding Palom.

[edit] Biography
The main character of Final Fantasy IV, Cecil Harvey, meets Palom and Porom in the village of Mysidia, after being shipwrecked. There, he meets the Elder of Mysidia who tells him that the only way he can defeat the evil Golbez is by becoming a Paladin on Mt. Ordeals. The Elder sends the twin mages Palom and Porom with Cecil to spy on him. The Elder is unsure of Cecil's true intentions after he killed many mages to gain the Water Crystal, under the orders of King Baron. Soon, Cecil and the twins meet the Sage Tellah who is trying to break the seal of the Meteor spell. When they reach the peak of the mountain, Cecil becomes a Paladin after defeating the Elemental Lord of Earth Scarmiglione and Tellah learns Meteor and remembers all the spells he had forgotten.
When they return to Mysidia, the Elder tells the twins that their journey to the top of Mt. Ordeals was not only for spying, but also a test of their powers. He then sends them with Cecil and Tellah to Baron in hopes of discovering the King's intentions. When they reach Baron, they discover that the King is really the Lord of Water Cagnazzo in disguise and defeat him in battle. Soon after, though, Cagnazzo uses the rest of his power to make the walls of Baron close in, in hopes of crushing the heroes. To save Cecil, Tellah, Yang, and Cid, Palom and Porom turn themselves to stone, stopping the walls. Since they became stone by their own will, Tellah cannot use his white magic to heal them.
Later, however, the Elder is able to use his power to restore the twins to normal. They return when the Giant of Babil is activated, part of a Mysidian airship that helps stop the giant from advancing. Before the final battle, Palom and Porom use their prayers to restore life to Cecil's party after it was drained by the evil Zemus. After the battle, the twins continue their apprenticeship in Mysidia and attend the wedding of Cecil and Rosa.

[edit] Bluff
Bluff is a command used by Palom to temporarily increase his magic power (wisdom). Incidentally, the player can have Palom do this several times to "layer" the effect, causing his magic attack to skyrocket, although it takes several uses before this becomes effective. It was not included in the original SNES American release of the game. This is related to Final Fantasy 9 in the way that Vivi could cast "focus" to increase his magic's attack power.

Palom knows some basic black magic including Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder, but can quickly learn more powerful second-level spells. If a Game Genie is used to keep him throughout the entire game, or by playing the Game Boy Advance remake, or if the player just powerlevels to extreme amounts, he will eventually learn every single Black spell at a faster rate than even Rydia.

Porom's Cry command makes it easier for the entire party to run away during a battle. It was not included in the original SNES American release of the game.

Porom possesses a limited amount of low level white magic while she is in the party, including Cure 1, Peep, and Slow. She can also learn a few spells as she levels up, such as Cure 2 and Blink. But if Porom is raised to high levels, she will eventually learn every white spell in the game.
[edit] Twin
Twin is an ability that requires both Palom and Porom. If they use it while they are both alive in battle, they can randomly cast either Comet or Flare on all enemies. In Final Fantasy IX the twin jesters Zorn and Thorn have the same twin spell (though Comet is renamed Meteorite). Upon the completion of the Lunar Trial in the Game Boy Advance version, the twins can cast the powerful Double Meteor (W.Meteo) with Twin Magic.
