Peter Desmond Farrell (August 16, 1922 - March 16, 1999) was a Dublin-born professional footballer. As an international he played for both Irelands - 28 times for the FAI XI and 7 times for the IFA XI. A versatile player he was primarily a wing-half, but also played at inside-forward.
Peter Farrell began his career with Irish side Shamrock Rovers, joining them on his 17th birthday in August 1939. He helped Rovers to two successive FAI Cup wins in 1944 (against Shelbourne) and 1945 (against Bohemians) and played in a third successive final in 1946, Rovers losing 2-1 to Drumcondra.
He captained the FAI XI on his national debut in Lisbon, Portugal in 1946 and also played in the following game against Spain before joining Everton later that year; Farrell moving with his Rovers and Ireland colleague Tommy Eglington for a combined fee of £20,000.
In 1949 he scored for Ireland against England at Goodison Park, England's first ever home defeat to anyone other than one of the Home Nations. He later captained Everton for seven seasons, leading the Goodison Park club to promotion from Division Two and two semi-finals in the FA Cup.
He left Everton in October 1957 to become player-manager of Tranmere Rovers, for a fee of £2,500, having made over 450 first appearances for Everton. Tranmere had been forced to apply for re-election the previosu season, but Farrell took the team to mid-table respectability. He played 114 league games for Tranmere, leaving in December 1960, with Tranmere struggling in the league, when he became manager of Welsh side Holyhead Town. Helped by a number of former Everton and Tranmere players that he brought to the club, Holyhead won the Welsh League (North). After leaving Holyhead, he returned to Ireland and managed Sligo Rovers.
Peter Farrell died in Dublin in March 1999, aged 76.
