[edit] Belated welcome
Howzit. Just noticed you around, so wanted to throw in a welcome from a fellow Capetonian. dewet|™ 22:07, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Also, I see you have a list of SAIX proxies on your user page; I've taken it and amended it with a few more. If you want, please contribute any others to User:Dewet/SAIX proxies; you can also substitute this list as a template, by using {{User:Dewet/SAIX proxies}} anywhere. Thanks, dewet|™ 08:23, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
-
- I've sent an email to Tim Starling (according to meta:XFF project), with the details of the proxies, and he replied that they have been whitelisted. So hopefully everything's sorted out now. dewet|™ 08:23, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Nice job wikifying Mantra. Big thanks. Ekajati 05:21, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Vectors
Image:ElfenLied manga page.jpg (fair use images cannot be displayed on user pages)
Phorque, great job on your edits to the Elfen Lied page (Ive just become a fan of the series). I have questions about the manga image you uploaded. One: Can you please tell me were you acquired it? (Ive browsed the internet and was never able to find any) Two: Do you know why Lucy has more than four Vectors (Ive actually never read the manga though I hope to import it soon) like she does in the anime (please no spoilers in your response). -- Psi edit 02:24, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the response Phorque. Ill check the page you gave aswell. Dont you think its kind of ridiculous that we (people not in Japan) never get officially translated original work, only anime adaptions?. -- Psi edit 23:44, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, it makes a lot of anime/manga series seem shallow or disjointed and full of loose ends. I've always leaned toward fan-translated anime and manga, because at least they don't try to dumb it down for our inferior non-Japanese minds ;) - Phorque 05:33, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Elliott Smith
Awesome job with helping out with the Elliott Smith article. Great job with sorting out all the refrences!
Shamrox 20:10, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- Elliott Smith, per your request, has been reviewed and I have added it the Good Articles list. Thank you. --Irishpunktom\talk 10:30, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- And... congrats on the FA! I'm really happy, because even if I didn't do much on the article, I love Elliott Smith. :) --Galaxiaad 18:55, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Knightley
Hi, you said the Keira Knightley was really close to being a Good Article - it just needed a longer into section. Well I added that section, is it good enough now? Mad Jack O'Lantern 03:19, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Naruto image sizes
Hi Phorque. I reverted your change to the image sizes in the Naruto article. When you specify an explicit width you override a user's thumb size preference, so you shouldn't do it unless it's necessary for some special formatting. If you want your thumbnails to be larger, change your "Thumbnail size" preference on the Files tab in your preferences. Thanks. ~MDD4696 18:01, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

WHY DID YOU DELETE APAS? I NEEDED THAT PAGE FOR MY COOKERY GCSE NOW WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?
[edit] Wikiproject Anime and manga
Hi, I don't understand why you have moved the article assessment table to another page. It was you who insisted on having examples for the animanga infobox and the convention box. So you want to have the infoboxes, which take up a lot of space and already have examples on their own pages so they are redundant, but you don't want to have the table for article assessment which is described only on one page because it is overkill? --Squilibob 23:44, 5 June 2006 (UTC) I still don't think you understand the point I'm trying to make and no, I'm not upset with you in any way - I just want to point out that you removed information for the same reason you wanted to add something else. You have a contradictory reason for removing information: "So it seemed space-consuming and redundant to have it there." is what you said about the assessment information table, but Template:Infobox animanga has had an example on it since August last year and now it has two. When you first put it on the page, Ned Scott, Kunzite and I all suggested that it was redundant clutter but then you went and removed something else that was redundant clutter and the example infobox remains. --Squilibob 11:48, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Helen martins.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Helen martins.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Smashing Pumpkins
Given your great contributions to get Elliott Smith to featured status, I hope you wouldn't mind taking a look at The Smashing Pumpkins, an article I'm working on heavily with that same goal in mind. I particularly ask that you lend a hand to shaping the lead section if you can. WesleyDodds 08:42, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] UCT userbox
Hey Rob, thought you might like to know that we now have a UCT userbox available at {{user UCT}}. Cheers, htonl 18:54, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- (with reference to your edit summary) You don't have to be an Ikey if you don't want to. ;-) You can always subst: and edit the userbox template, or just add a category link without the userbox... - htonl 20:45, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- As a comp sci student with a Wikipedia account, surely you know how to Google for things... ;-) But seriouly, it's not that easy to find on the Web and you're the second person to ask that question today. Basically, it started in the 1910s as an anti-semitic slur ("Ike" or "Ikey" apparently being a common derogatory nickname for Jews at the time) based on Stellenbosch students' perception that there were a lot of Jewish students at UCT. Then, for whatever reason, UCT students picked it up and started using it themselves. There's an article at http://www.rugbyrugby.com/LATEST_NEWS/story_35922.shtml which explains in more detail. - htonl 21:54, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Golden Boy (manga) GA
Thanks for wrapping that up for me! For some reason the article's talk page wasn't on my watch list, so I missed Lincher's post eluded me. I agree with you that the manga image seems reasonable, especially if placed elsewhere in the text. I'll try to restore it sometime soon. Anyway, thanks again!--Monocrat 03:25, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Sex Pistols FARC
Hey Phorque, Sex Pistols is undergoing WP:FAR at the moment, and while it seems more or less compliant with FA on content, sources etc, it needs a few strong copy editors to take it over the line. Sorry to bother you about this, but I've admired your work on Elliott Smith, and was hoping you might lend a hand in adding a bit of polish to the text. It's one of those articles that has become disjointed by 'tack on edits', and as a result many of the paragraphs are illogical, and badly phrased. There are a few editors working on the page at the moment, but we're working to a deadline of next monday before final review, and that's a bit tight. I understand if you are busy with other projects, I tought I'd might as well chance my arm anyway. Thanks - Coil00 21:36, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the edits and inline comments; the lead is always the most difficult element - am grateful and will try to incorparate your suggestions. - Coil00 00:56, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Maddog2020.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Maddog2020.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 20:14, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Some help
I've spent the last four days or so trying to turn Smells Like Teen Spirit from an okay article with just 4 inline citations to something that can be submitted as a GA candiate. I'm still trying to tweak some stuff, but if you can lend a hand that would be appreciated. I don't know if you own Live! Tonight! Sold Out!" or the box set, but if you could also provide screencaps of the SLTS music video or a live eperformance (first performance or Top of the Pops, maybe), that would be great.
I don't know if you own Gish or Adore, but [[The Smashing Pumpkins] could probably use soundclips of "I Am One" and "Perfect".
You might want to take a look at Green Day. It was delisted as a Good Article a few months back and repeated attempts to get it relisted have failed, many due to lack of references, fannish tone, and a lack of understanding by many editors as to what constitutes a fair use image. The amount of pictures that have been put up and removed is quite sizable. WesleyDodds 02:47, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Oh? Ou? O!
Actually, the alternate Romanization as Kohta is the clincher that it is indeed a long O sound. (Oh is the same sound as Ou and Ō) If it were not a long O, but rather a vocalized u, then it wouldn't be written that way. There are apparently a very few cases where an ou is not one syllable, I know of exactly 1. (Yoruichi Shihouin)
For an absolute proof, look at the Characters of Elfen Lied page, where it gives his Kanji name. The first character is 耕. Looking at wikt:耕, it's pronounced Kō. --tjstrf talk 16:28, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Alternative rock article rankings
Hey, we've implemented a ranking system for the Alternative music Wikiproject (Top, high, mid, and low importance). You might want to drop by Wikipedia:WikiProject Alternative music to discuss the application of rankings to articles on the talk page. WesleyDodds 22:40, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Smashing Pumpkins FA
Just to let you know, that FA nomination should technically be closed; it was listed and archived months ago, and the talk page even say "former featured article candidate" in reference to that nom. I want to nominate it again soon, but a few seem to be getting confused thinking the one you've been replying in is still open. It's not, and it shouldn't be. Post on the talk page if there's anything you think still needs to be addressed for the article before we head to a new FAC. WesleyDodds 22:59, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hey, we need fair use rationales for the soundclips and images you uploaded for the page. WesleyDodds 23:13, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Hey, I found this while searching through Creative Commons. WesleyDodds 03:19, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Hey Phorque, I don't think anybody is saying that you can't use any fair use images, just that, at present, the article has too many. I think you should ask JKelly's openion on his talk as to how many would be acceptable, and trim down to that number. (He is a very helpful editor, and may also have some good suggestions on how to go about tracking down some free files). Wesley has done great work on the article, and it's a damn shame to see the review distracted by this issue. Bye + Ceoil 16:21, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- I've asked Jkelly directly for some guidance, hopefully this can be sorted out soon. + Ceoil 17:01, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Here's a proposal I've come up with in order to try and cut down on all the fair use:
- Make the free Billy Corgan image the infobox picture. Right now, he is the most consistent member of the band, and find free images of members of the band while they were in the band is next to impossible
- Put the 1990 promo image in the Early Days section. Fair use could be further supported by commenting on their psychedelic image as shown in the photo.
- Remove the "Disarm" soundclip and possibly the live screen shot.
- Possibly remove one of the Mellon Collie soundclips, although I feel we have more than enough rationale to keep both.
- Remove either one of the soundclips or one of the photos from the Adore/Machina section. we definitely need to keep the "Ava Adore" clip, but I'm thinking we could do without the Machina clip. when it comes to pictures, it's probably more important to show a picture with Melissa auf der Maur than to show one without Jimmy Chamberlin.
Let me know what you think, and hopefully we can come up with a solution that will sway the objectors yet still leave a reasonable amount of media in the article. WesleyDodds 11:52, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] MACHINA II song
Phorque man, I'm wonderin if you can help me out here.. I'm having copyright problems with a MACHINA II song I uploaded, "Let Me Give the World to You". I put a {{Copyrighted free use}} tag as the licence, but now some one has removed it and said they "find it highly unlikely that this "redistribution" includes commercial use and the creation of derivative works". Can we solve this? Is there a better licence or some kind of proof we can provide, or are we snagged? --Reaper X 00:15, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Another FAC
Would you mind taking a look at the neglected FAC Ellis Paul and posting suggestions. The article was largely based on Elliott Smith (as was an article i recently got through (Nick Drake); your input here would be greatly appreciated. + Ceoil 22:14, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] WikiProject Rock music invitation
Hello WikiProject Alternative music member.
WikiProject Alternative music, in my eyes, has proved to be successful "improving the encyclopaedic coverage of articles relating to alternative rock", and improving their quality as well. One specific example I have witnessed is The Smashing Pumpkins article. The page has gone from a mediocre work, to GA status, to FA nomination. Only appropriate, as the Pumpkins are undeniably one of the most influential alternative rock bands on the 1990's and beyond.
This is the stuff I wish to achieve with the somewhat recently ressurected WikiProject Rock music. I hope to also attract attention to rock music articles of all sorts, and hopefully change some to GA or FA status. I invite you to come join us, and not only be a member of alternative Wikipedians, but the rockin' ones as well.
Rock on.
--Reaper X 02:58, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sonic Youth infobox picture
I was refered by WesleyDodds in regards to this
the Sonic Youth picture that was in the infobox box has been removed due as what the user described as the following "Removed fair use album cover from article. These images may only be used to illustrate articles or sections specifically about the album"
I found a few ones that are good, one that is perfect. This one [1], does it matter or not if it is not licensed under creative commons, because I only found one suitable for that purpose under creative commons. I have not contacted the photographer yet, as I wanted some thoughts on this, not to mention I don't know the process of uploading and describing pictures from flickr and contacting and asking permission --Pantophobia 23:19, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Flickr images
I see that you're pretty active on Flickr throughout the Smasing Pumpkins pics. Whats the deal with those? How come I haven't seen many of them? Are you still in the process of making inquiries or somethin? It'd be cool to get some more free-use images on the SP article. --Reaper X 22:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
Bit late but thanks for reviewing Angel of Death (song), i'll work on a new section, thanks. M3tal H3ad 01:18, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] This week's Alternative Wikiproject collab
Can you see if you can find more free images for The Cure? There's quite a few free ones already of Robert Smith (three of them in fact on his page), but none of the rest of the band. Given the band's line-up changes it's probably only important we get images of Simon Gallup and Lol Tolhurst, and historical images (such as the Cure prior to 1982, before they had the big goth hair and the make-up) are also needed. WesleyDodds 02:01, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] update on the Sonic Youth infobox pic
after long wait, i finally got a response from the photographer which follows:
Hi Patrick, thanks for contacting me. that would be fine for wikipedia to use my sonic youth photos. please credit me for each photo that is used. credit should be as such: picturethesound.com if possible a link to my website would be wonderful. www.picturethesound.com thanks again! -kim
it is listed as All Rights Reserved link to photo, but as you see above she is willing to allow use of her photo, should i upload as is and give her credit, I am not sure if she wants to license use of her photo through creative commons as she does have her own site and all
--Pantophobia 17:43, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
