Playlinc
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Playlinc is a game browsing and messaging platform that enables multiplayer gameplay, voice chat and game management. It is developed by Super Computer International in partnership with Verizon and AOL. Because it integrates with the AIM namespace (although it is not technically an AIM client) a user can use an AOL Instant Messenger screen name as an account and can instant message AIM users. One of its notable features is that a user is able to create a free dedicated server for some games. Playlinc's closed beta began in partnership with the Cyberathlete Amateur League and Valve Software with a $100,000 Half-Life 2: Deathmatch tournament to promote Verizon's FIOS internet service. After the tournament, the Playlinc client was released to the public as a free download.
Playlinc is definately a true AIM client... It is not put out by AOL, however, AOL has a partner program enabling partnerships allowing others to be AIM clients. It may not support all the AIM client functionality, but it definatetly is a true aim client, and works fine when IMing with non PlayLinc clients as well
