Prestolee
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prestolee is a small village near the town of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, England.
It has a church (Holy Trinity: due to close) that was used by TV show Coronation Street as a venue for many weddings and known to fans as All Saints Church, Weatherfield. It also has a primary school with a rating of good with its inspection . The village has some problems with vandalism and littering, mainly near its only shop, where local people tend to congregate. This is one reason why some people know Prestolee as 'The Village Of The Damned'.
Prestolee is notable in that it is surrounded almost completely by water and effectively an island, with the River Irwell wrapping around three sides and the remnants of the Bolton and Bury canal on the other. There is one practical road (Bridge Street) that provides vehicle access over the river Irwell as well as Prestolee Road, which is little more than a dirt track that provides access to a couple of farms en-route to the village, rather than having any significant use for village access. Prestolee Road also has a very small bridge, over the canal, that is impractical for any vehicle larger than a car to cross and even that is not recommended.
Another point to note is that it has a Manchester postcode(M26), its telephone area code (01204 Farnworth, Bolton), Council taxes and local councillors are from Bolton, yet its central government representative, or member of parliament (MP) represents a Manchester district as it is actually within Manchester, not Bolton.
As well as the church, its other major landmark is Prestolee/Kearsley Mill.
The name of the village Prestolee is locally shortened to "P/lee".
