Quadruple star system

A quadruple star system or quaternary star system is a star system composed of four stars. Quadruple star systems are quite rare, Mizar and Theta Orionis being the only examples currently known. There will probably be more quadruple star systems spotted as astronomy technology continues to improve. Mizar was thought to be a single star until 1650, when it was determined to be a double star by Giovanni Battista Riccioli, the first binary star system to be discovered. Its component stars Mizar A and Mizar B were subsequently discovered to each be binary stars themselves.
