Turner High School is a part of Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. The school's mascot is the lions. R. L. Turner opened in 1963 as a replacement for Carrollton High School, which could no longer support the growing numbers of students.
R. L. Turner is home to three academies Biomed, METSA, and AMAT., programs for gifted students looking to specialize in a particular field. The Academy of Biomedical Professions (Biomed) has some of the top health classes in the nation, with internships at local hospitals and excellent facilities. The Academy of Media Arts and Technology (AMAT) has some of the premier media, television, and computer equipment in the nation. A full-fledged TV studio, radio station, and editing rooms give AMAT the ability to work on professional quality equipment. AMAT also has courses for Computer Science, Networking, and Business Computer Information Skills (BCIS). Math, engineering, technology, and science academy (METSA) is an academy that was recently put into place, it serves students who want to go into an engineering field. It opens in the school year 07-08.
R.L. Turner was built with some of highest technological advances available in the school district. Each classroom contains an expensive A/V equipment cart, giving teachers a great advantage and a great resource while teaching. Each A/V cart includes a media projector, its own computer, a VCR, various equipment, a DVD player, and an overhead camera to replace the traditional overhead projectors. These equipment carts are popular with other schools due to their ability to enhance each students learning abilities.
Turner is currently under construction; their recently remodeled gymnasium is now open for students use. They are undergoing an art wing renovation that will allow students to experience their education to the fullest.
R.L. Turner has a mentoring program hosted by Bedie Post, the mentoring program is where seniors or academically successful juniors meet with a group of freshmen every three weeks to discuss grades and other issues. Mentoring allows both, the mentee and mentors to learn from one another and help with issues that many high school students face. Since the program started, the freshmen drop out rate has significantly lowered.
