"Rain" was the fifth (and final, in the US) single from Madonna's 1992 album Erotica.

Released the summer of 1993, it peaked at a respectable #14 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart, and received extensive airplay in the US. While some may have seen this chart position as a disappointment, it was a noticeable jump from the preceding single ("Bad Girl") which had peaked at #36, and was arguably the first step in Madonna's rebounding from the backlash of the Erotica period. Internationally, the single was a major success, perhaps bouyed by The Girlie Show Tour which was running roughly concurrently with the single's rise up the charts. Though perceived by some fans as one of the Erotica album's most conservative moments, 'Rain' featured some interesting vocal work, particularly the overlapping of verses in the latter part of the song.
For the UK release "Open Your Heart" was included as the b-side due to it being used in a Renault car commercial at the time.

The video, directed by Mark Romanek, was a lush video set on a sound stage. Madonna introduced her next short lived incarnation in the video; the gamine who appeared in the Fever video was back again, but this time she was black haired. The overall effect of the make up and video's styling evoked Japanese sensibilities, a cultural approach she would time and time again borrow and remodel as her own. The video won an MTV VMA for its technical brilliance.
