Raymond E. Shaw Elementary School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Raymond E. Shaw Elementary School is an elementary school that was first opened in September 1975 in Millbury, Massachusetts for children in 3rd grade through to 6th grade. It was built next to Elmwood Street School, which was a school for children in Kindergarten through to 2nd grade. The school was named after Raymond E. Shaw, who was very active in education in Millbury. For over 25 years, Elmwood and Shaw had their K-2 (Elmwood) and 3-6 (Shaw) grade format to serve all elementary school grades.
In 2001, Elmwood underwent renovation and expansion; afterwards, they expanded to include third grade (K-3). Shaw changed to accommodate the change, now offering a 4-7 grade format. Grade 7 was pulled down from the Millbury High School, which changed from a 7-12 to an 8-12 grade format. Shortly after that, however, Millbury High also renovated and expanded. The seventh (which was restored to Millbury High) and eighth grades had their own wing, separate from the 9-12 grades. Without the seventh grade, Shaw reverted to the 4-6 grade format.
As of 2004, almost 500 students are enrolled at Shaw. There are 23 teachers in total, dedicated to individual subjects, and several special education teachers. Shaw also has many different school bands, such as a jazz band, wind ensemble, concert band, and a beginners' band for children in fourth grade. Classes range from 20 to 25 students per class. As of 2006, the principal is Rita M. Bolton.
Shaw participates in the National Geographic Bee at the school level. In March of 2006, Charles Surette, a sixth grader attending Shaw and winner of the school level bee in January, took the written test given to winners at the school level and had one the top 100 scores in the state. Surette became the first student in Shaw history to go to the state level of the bee.
