Recovered reality (Japanese: 回復された現実 - Torimodoshita genjitsu) is the episode number 214 of the anime series Naruto, and the sixth episode of the 9th season.
[edit] Plot
Naruto and Menma open this episode inside Tsunade's office. Naruto reveals to her the details regarding Menmna's flute and the effects it had upon him while he chased the attacking ninja. Further discussion reveals that the attacker's identity is still unknown, however Tsunade reveals that she has heard of some techniques related(that is instrument-related)to Menma's, used in the Rice Country. Menma and Naruto immediately request permission to travel to the Rice Country and investigate Menma's missing past. The fifth grants their request immediately. The scene ends with a look of concern upon Tsunade's face.
Naruto and Menma, with Neji and Ten-Ten accompnying them, set out after a brief discussion with the ramen restuarant owner concerning the preparation of Naruto's fermenting bamboo shoots. As they travel Naruto lets Ten-Ten and Neji know their presence is unnecessary. They respond that this is a mission and so they must come along. We flash back to Tsunade's office, Naruto is full of energy and ready to set out but Tsunade stops him. She wants him to stay behind and a discussion follows where Naruto tries to ensure Tsunade that Menma is a good guy. Tsunade points out that he could be a spy, afterall the Sound Village and the Rice Country were formerly places Orochimaru used to hide and that Menma's abilities are similar to those of Tayuya, the ninja Shikamaru fought during Sasuke's kidnapping. Naruto seems to accept this grudgingly and we flash back to the present. Naruto looks over at Menma as they travel and thinks, "To say that Menma is the enemy...It can't be!"
The group continues moving through the woods. Neji observes Menma's movements and then suddenly both he and Ten-Ten accelerate rapidly past Naruto and Menma. As they pass Ten-Ten informs Naruto that they will leave him behind if he can't keep up. This seems to surprise Naruto, Neji and Ten-Ten streak ahead but Menma easily matches their speed. Neji looks over to see Menma and seems suprised, as he does this he steps upon a branch that breaks causing him to fall. Menma executes a series of fast acrobatic moves, catching Neji as he falls. Ten-Ten and Naruto land next to the pair and Naruto complains that they were going too fast. Neji decides it is time they took a break.
The group sits upon some rocks, the three Konoha ninja talk amongst themselves while Menma sits higher up enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Neji voices his concern about Menma. He informs the group that earlier he was moving at his fastest speed and fell on purpose. Naruto is shocked and Neji goes on to state that Menma is faster than any of them. Ten-Ten states that if they were to fight Menma, it would be troublesome. This angers Naruto and he once again states that Menma is not the enemy and is a good guy. Irritated Naruto leaves to join Menma. At this time Menma begins playing his Ocarina(flute). Naruto interrupts him and tell him, "Thats a nice tune." Menma smiles appreciativly and thanks him for fixing his flute before returning to his song. Abruptly Neji and Ten-Ten appear and Neji demands that Menma stop playing or else they will attack. Neji and Ten-Ten explain that the music could be a signal to the enemy. They reveal that their mission is to find out who Menma is as well as apprehend the unknown ninja that attacked the village. Neji also informs Menma that he doesn't trust him. Menma seems shocked and dissapointed but stops. He wonders aloud about his past and what type of person he used to be, asking Naruto what kind of person would he be if he was reborn. Naruto doesn't have an answer, but before the group can reflect any further Neji notices a strange smell. Naruto says that it smells like something is burning, and the group rushes to investigate.
They come upon a burnt out settlement. As Menma looks around the surrounding trigger a flashback to the attack he was part of before Naruto discovered him. He seems shaken but assures the group he is fine and they proceed. Arrows flash towards Naruto and Ten-Ten. Menma yells a warning and manages to knock them to the ground in time. The group is immediately surrounded by armed villagers, demanding to know who they are. After a short heated exchange, Ten-Ten manages to convince the villagers that they are Konoha shinobi. The lead villager informs them that if they have no purpose here than to leave.
Next the group is shown standing beside the banks of a river that flows through the village. Neji detects someone's presence and orders them to show themselves. A woman appears with the same small girl Menma spared during the attack. He approaches the two and attempts to give the child a flower but she hids behind the older woman. The woman asks the group if they are indeed ninja and admits to having been listening to their conversation. Naruto seems very pleased and states, "Well, I don't mean to brag, but the story of Uzumaki Naruto from the Konoha village is highly wide-spread." The woman remarks that she hasn't heard of him and in his dissapointed shock falls onto his face. The woman goes on to ask the group to save the village. She goes on to explain that because of Orochimaru and the Rice Country's past behavior the area has become a demilitarized zone. Because of the international treaty no soldiers can be inside the demilitarized zone. This alone isn't the problem, however, the village has a small gold mine. The mine and the treaty have caused the village to be repeatedly targeted by thieves. She reveals that the current damage was caused by a group of thieves, which she fears will return. She begs the group for help. Although Naruto is ready offer their help, Neji cuts him off and turns the woman down. He tells her that they cannot accept because they are in the middle of a mission and cannot do anything without an official command from the village.
At this time the woman's brother arrives(the leader of the armed villagers from earlier). He asks his sister what she is doing and then informs the group that, "There isn't any good person who's a ninja." This irritates Naruto who demands to know what he means. It is revealed that the attacking thieves were ninja. He leads the group a field filled will fresh graves. He angrily turns down the groups suggestion that they evacuate and then informs them that the young girl's name is Fuki. Since both her parents were killed in the attack she hasn't been able to speak. The brother and sister walk off with Fuki and Neji prepares to lead the group on. Suddenly Menma blurts out that he will stay and help protect the villagers. Neji and Ten-Ten protest but they can't think of a response when Menma tells them that he feels that the village may help him remember something. Ten-Ten doesn't believe him but Naruto informs her that she can't do anything about it. Besides, "He[Menma] is a good fool who wants to save people." Naruto tells Neji and Ten-Ten to go back to the village as he and Menma set off.
Menma and Naruto set about to building a wall to protect the village. The village leader confronts the two and tells them to leave but Naruto and Menma ignore his protests and continue with the wall. Ten Ten and Neji watch from nearby but fall asleep as time passes. When Ten-Ten awakes she looks at their progress and observes the two both looking exausted. As they begin to hammer in a stake Naruto slips and it seems Menma is doomed to smashing his head with his mallet but luckily at the last second Ten-Ten knocks the mallet aside with one of her chained maces. She seems irritated but joins the two in their construction efforts. Shortly after Fuki and Ran(the woman who asked for help earlier) appear with food and drink for the group and stay to help. Soon villagers are appears all over the place to help build the wall. Eventually even the leader drops his crossbow and joins in.
The unnamed ninja appears and begins to watch the construction. However, Ten-Ten notices the glint of the sun off his telescope and whistles the group to alert. Naruto attacks and quickly recognizes him as the ninja who attack Konoha village the day before. Neji appears to Naruto's suprise and joins in the chase/attack. Naruto is knocked from the air when colliding with a net and Menma rushes to his side. He begins to play his flute and Naruto and Neji's chakra are both amplified. They both attack the ninja in a blur of action. The leader arrives and fires his crossbow at the enemy, who easily dodges the bolt and throws his kunai with a red rope or ribbon attached at his attacker. Menma leaps into the weapons path at the last second and takes the strike upon his back. Naruto and Neji rush to him and the unknown ninja escapes.
They take Menma back to the village where the leader prepares to operate upon him. However, while removing his shirt he discovers a mark/tattoo upon Menma's shoulder. He bolts upright and says he cannot operate upon Menma because he was one of the men who attacked the village. End episode.
