Richard Ward (American actor)

Richard Ward, (1915 – 1979) was a gravel-voiced black American actor in films and TV from the late 1950s onwards until his death. In the pilot film for the cop show of the 1970s, Starsky and Hutch, he played Captain Dobey, though in the series itself he was replaced by Bernie Hamilton. Ward did however appear as a different character in one episode in the final series, shortly before his death of a heart ailment.
