Robert M. Carter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert M. "Bob" Carter is a research professor in the Marine Geophysical Laboratory at James Cook University, Australia. He is a geologist and marine geologist with special interests in stratigraphy and, more recently, climate change. Carter is a former Director of Australia's Secretariat for the Ocean Drilling Program.
Carter is a prominent global warming sceptic and has consistently opposed the consensus view on global warming [1]. A March 2007 article in the Sydney Morning Herald noted that "Professor Carter, whose background is in marine geology, appears to have little, if any, standing in the Australian climate science community." [2]
Carter has published scientific papers on the growth and form of the molluscan shell, New Zealand and Pacific geology,New Zealand Maritime Glaciation, Quaternary geology, stratigraphic classification, sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, the Great Barrier Reef, and taxonomic palaeontology. In addition to scientific publications, Bob Carter has contributed letters and opinion pieces on science topics to a variety of newspapers, magazines and web magazines.
Carter has addressed many academic, professional, and business organisations, some of which are listed on his website. His titles include "Global Warming: Neat Science or Hot Air", and "The Great Barrier Reef is Doing Just Fine, Thank You." He offers also to "prepare modified or alternative presentations, including shorter talks, which are tailored to particular occasions or to the interests of particular audience groups" (from his website, July 2006).[3]
Carter's website states that his research "has been supported by grants from competitive public research agencies, especially the Australian Research Council (ARC)," and that he "receives no research funding [sic] from special interest organisations such as environmental groups, energy companies or government departments."; however, he has written articles on global warming for Tech Central Station, which received 63% of its income in 2003 from ExxonMobil.[4]
