Jordan and James playing a house show
Origin Naples, Florida
Country United States
Years active 2003–present
Genres Rock, Alternative Rock
Labels n/a
Members Jordan C.
Past members Mike V., Vanessa R., Alex D., Gardy B.

OCELOT was formed in Spring 2003 as a project for Confirmation into the church that Jordan and Mike attended. They were required to do something during the service they were confirmed in... they decided to play some good rock music. Jordan's mother suggested "Turn, Turn, Turn" by The Byrds because the words were taken straight out of The Bible. Since then, they have played numerous shows including many benefit shows for the handicapped of Collier County.

[edit] 4-Way Distraction

On just about the First of March, 2006, Jordan C. was approached about playing drums for a few friends of his. Alan G. told Jordan that he, Patrick L., and James B. wanted to be on the bill at Battle of the Bands 2006 at a local school and asked if Jordan would be interested in playing drums for them. Jordan readily accepted and he and Alan got to work creating a band name and logo. Some of the better proposed band names were Buddhist Con Men (Alan) and Difference of Opinion (Patrick), but none of them stayed. One night Alan came up with 4-Way Distraction. He proposed it to Jordan, who then eagerly accepted it. They set to work on creating a logo. The original logo was made in PowerPoint by Alan and sent to Jordan to make it into an image and add his touch. The result was the notoriously unrevealed stop sign logo. Now all they had left to do was practice. It was the week before the show (March 18th) and they hadn't yet practiced. Patrick's house was the band's headquarters and so Friday night, Jordan went to Patrick's house for his first practice with one of them. Patrick was the brains behind 4-Way Distraction. He wrote the guitar and bass parts and he wrote all the lyrics to all the songs. Some time was taken trying to make the drumset Patrick had playable. He was missing a cymbal and the one he had had a very poorly working stand, the hi-hats inverted when they were closed, and the bass drum pedal barely worked. After Jordan figured out what how to play the motley drumset, Patrick showed him what was going on. The first song Patrick played for Jordan was one called "My Own Soul" which featured the lyric "Now I know what to say, I just couldn't that day." Jordan immediately came up with a drum part for it. They played it through all the way (about 5 minutes) including the interlude and then segue-ed it with "Ersatz Halo", a funky song about heresy. They also ran through a few cover songs including "Can't Stop" by Red Hot Chili Peppers and "Chop Suey!" by System of a Down. The band was chiefly influenced by Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Mars Volta, and System of a Down. Later that same night, James arrived from baseball practice. Jordan excitedly told James that he'd written a drum part for one of their songs. James asked him to play it and, upon hearing it, didn't recognize it. Jordan cued in Patrick and they played the song for James without the ambient guitar intro (directly influenced by The Mars Volta) and James smiled. James picked up on vocals and they played the song once through with vocals. They were going to sleep over at Patrick's house, but Jordan couldn't and Alan's parents couldn't get him there so the next morning, at about 11am, Jordan arrived at Patrick's house with his long brown hair straightened and wearing the aviators that would become signature for 4-Way Distraction. Alan had arrived just before him and James was already there. They set to work. Jordan had brought the blown up logo to show Patrick and James and they decided it was going on the bass drum. Everyone plugged in and Jordan sat behind the drum set. Patrick turned on everything and clicked his pedal a few times. Then Patrick started his ambient solo. It was beautiful. After a couple minutes, Jordan counted off the song and they started for the first time as a full band. The song rocked. After that, Patrick introduced "Ersatz Halo" and everyone found out what they had to do for that. Jordan wrote backing vocals for it and sung with James while playing drums. They also ran through "Can't Stop", "Californication", and "Chop Suey!".

The weekend ended. Show week had arrived. The boys didn't have school the next friday so they went to Patrick's house again to rehearse. They discovered a clever George W. Bush plastic bust that quoted him when you pressed the red button. Alan wasn't there. Patrick had to print out the lyrics to "My Own Soul" for James to make sure he knew them so they journeyed to Patrick's room. James excitedly asked Patrick if he could show Jordan the video of them playing "My Own Soul" in the Summer of '05. Patrick handed him the video camera and said "here." They found it on the digital drive and watched it. Patrick had a mohawk and James's hair was quite short but it was no doubt "My Own Soul" acoustic. The lyrics had been printed and they set back to the make-shift performance space in Patrick's living room. They continued to attempt to make a repertoire.

[edit] Currently

Jordan and James played at open mic night at Barnes & Noble on November 7th as a birthday gift to Jordan's mother. They played a set of 2 songs (that's all they allowed) including Taking Back Sunday's "Cute Without the 'e'" and Incubus' "Summer Romance". Jordan and James performed on the bill as OCELOT, officially inaugurating James into the band. When they got the list to sign up on, they put themselves as "Ocelot (The Beatles)" and were the first musical act to sign up. They got there an hour early and as a result were allowed to have a soundcheck session where they played exerpts from Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?", Red Hot Chili Peppers' Under the Bridge, and Tenacious D's "Tribute" and "FHG". During their performance of "Cute Without the 'e'", Jordan looked into the audience and noticed a girl he didn't know singing along with him. Members of OCELOT's fan club were located to their left and near the back of the area and were definitely supportive, screaming after songs and everything. After the show, they broke down the set pretty quickly and James had to bolt because it was a school night and he had homework, but Jordan was stopped and asked to sign 5 things including two arms, a headband, a belt, and a shoe. As they were cleaning up, the lady who ran the open mic night turned to them and said "come back next month!" excitedly with a smile. They replied "of course" while returning big smiles.

[edit] Future

There is to be an EP entitled Acoustica with tentatively six tracks, one of which will most likely be Jordan's popular cover of Taking Back Sunday's "Cute Without the 'E'". This has been reported to be recorded (or in the process of recording) in James' home studio.

Rumor has it that there is a proposed band with four people to fill nine musical positions:

  • Jordan C. on vocals, piano, and guitar
  • James B. on vocals and guitar
  • as yet unknown on bass
  • as yet unknown on vocals, tambourine, and flute

[edit] Evolution of sound

"This band was formed for the sole reason to have fun and create awesome rock music. After the initial excitement of having a rock band died down, I got serious about writing good songs that people would would listen to and say, 'Man I like that song,' you know? You get the feeling of accomplishment."
- Jordan C. on OCELOT

[edit] Line-up changes

  • Drummer Mike V. left the band in 2005 to join another band and because he wasn't serious about the concept of a band.
  • In 2005, bassist Vanessa R. was dismissed from the group because of creative and personal differences.
  • In 2005, OCELOT was lucky enough to have Gardy B. play drums for the music video of the single "believe.".

"Yes I am aware that epidermis is misspelled but that's because the song is not about skin but rather, something that grows on your skin that's like a fungus... yeah... it's pretty emo."
