The Romanian Cup (Romanian: Cupa României) is a football competition held annually since 1933-34. It is open to all clubs affiliated with FRF (Romanian Football Federation) regardless of the league they belong to. The 18 teams from Liga I are directly qualified for the last 32 where they are joined by other lower-league sides qualified form the preliminary rounds.
Ever since this season, the competition is called Cupa României Timişoreana, after its sponsor. The pairings for the draw are made, just as they have always been, with seeded and unseeded teams, which means that lower-league teams have very little chances of meeting each other. The first two rounds are played on neutral turf (even though the first round had been held on the lower-league side's venue up to this year), the Quarter Finals and the Semifinals in two-leg encounters, while the final is held on a pre-determined arena. Up to this season, the final had been held on Lia Manoliu Stadium, except for years in which it had been under renovation and the host would have been some other stadium in Bucharest. This year though, the final will be held in Timişoara, at the Dan Păltinişanu Stadium, due to a sponsorship deal with the beer-company Timişoreana. It will be for the second time when the competition finished in another city than Bucharest after Braşov in 1989.
The competition's greatest performers are FC Steaua Bucureşti with 20 trophies, followed by FC Dinamo Bucureşti and FC Rapid Bucureşti, both with 12.
