[edit] Biography
Rory is the only daughter of Lorelai Gilmore, and the first born daughter of Christopher Hayden, born October 1984 in Hartford, Connecticut, at 4:03am; every year at that time (when possible), Lorelai tells Rory the story of the hours before her birth and the actual event. Lorelai had Rory when she was only 16 which makes them more like best friends or surrogate sisters than mother and daughter. Rory shares her mother's taste in junk food, coffee, movies, and much more. Rory was brought up in the Independence Inn in Stars Hollow because that is where her mother worked. Rory and her mother lived in the potting shed at the inn, where Jackson's cousin Rune lived in later seasons. Eventually, Lorelai was able to buy a house (when she was 26) and that is where Rory spent the rest of her childhood.
Rory attended Chilton Academy for her sophomore, junior, and senior years which helped make it possible for her to eventually enroll at Yale. When Rory was a child, she and Lorelai dreamed of her going to Harvard, but in Rory's senior year (the third season), the girls made a pro/con list and decided Yale was the best school for Rory. Shy and studious, Rory gets along with her grandparents better than her mother does, even going to them for comfort when she and Lorelai are on the skids.
In the first few days of her sophomore year at Stars Hollow High, Rory received an acceptance letter to enroll in the prestigious and fictional Chilton Academy (which was named for Alex Chilton). To pay tuition, Lorelai had to ask for the money from her estranged parents. Richard and Emily agreed to pay for Rory's schooling but there was one string attached to the deal: Lorelai and Rory would have to come to their house every Friday night for dinner. This tradition continued after graduation as the elder Gilmores went on to pay her college tuition as well.
While in high school, Rory met and fell in love with Dean Forester and dated him for most of two seasons before breaking up with him to date 'bad boy' Jess Mariano (nephew of Luke Danes, owner of the local diner where Rory and Lorelai eat every day). This relationship did not last either, in large part because Rory could not handle Jess's problems and erratic behavior, though both men carried a torch for Rory for a long time afterwards. Dean went on to get married, straight after high school, but it was soon clear that he had impulsively done it as a rebound from Rory. He ultimately had an affair with her (during which Rory lost her virginity) leading to a quick divorce. Afterwards, Rory dated publishing heir Logan Huntzberger, a fellow Yale student.
After graduating Chilton, of which she was named Valedictorian, Rory went on to attend Yale University, where she was a member of Branford College. Although it was always her life-long dream to attend Harvard University, she turned it down (along with Princeton University) for Yale. While at Yale, Rory shared a dorm room with fellow Chilton alumna Paris Geller, and was majoring in English, but temporarily dropped out of Yale after newspaper owner Mitchum Huntzberger, father of Logan, told her that she doesn't have what it takes to make it as a journalist. During her break from Yale, she lived with her grandparents and was required to do community service after impulsively stealing a yacht. As a result of her dropping out (and the yacht theft), a rift developed between Rory and her mother. The once best-known mother-daughter duo were now at terrible odds. Her best friend Lane Kim was always there to comfort her. She eventually returned to Yale and to her mother, but the damage had already been done. The two still had trouble getting along with each other, and her relationship with her grandparents has also soured. All of this culminated into one of their Friday night dinners deteriorating into a shouting match and a drinking binge after which much of their problems were resolved. Her bitter separation with her mother ended as quickly as it had started, as it was more so harshly received by fans, critics, and the actors themselves.[citation needed] Rory finally realized what she was doing was wrong when Jess drops by for a surprise visit, expressing his frustrations with her new changes (dropping out of Yale, living with her grandparents, etc...) Rory also talked her way into a job at Huntzberger's newspaper (a storyline that has been quietly dropped). When Jess was visiting, Logan started acting poorly towards him which lead to a fight between Rory and Logan. While Rory thought they were just fighting, Logan saw it as a break-up.
Rory and Logan reunited and moved in together, prompted by Paris angrily kicking her out of their apartment because Rory replaced her as editor of the Yale Daily News. Rory moved out of Logan's apartment because he slept with some of his sister's friends when they were broken up . She returned to him, but did not fully forgive him until an accident with the 'Life and Death Brigade' landed him in the hospital. During a visit to Jess in Philadelphia, she solemnly confided to him, after sharing a kiss, that she was still with Logan.
Rory's attitude and her appearance have changed considerably during the tenure of the show. Formerly known to sport a grunge look, particularly in the shows infancy, Rory's fashion tastes have evolved, often showcasing her at the height of fashion in later episodes. She has also grown accustomed to life among the elite during her relationship with Logan and under the influence of her grandmother, Emily's DAR Club, socialite set. Rory is currently a full-time student anticipating her graduation from college this year.
